High School Roundup: Sage’s Eltamami is Academy League champ

BOYS’ GOLF

Academy League finals

LAGUNA NIGUEL — Ahmed Eltamami of Sage Hill shot a two-under-par 70 on Tuesday, winning the league championship at El Niguel Country Club.

Eltamami finished with a two-round total of 142, six shots ahead of Anthony Cecere of St. Margaret’s. Eltamami had shot an even-par 72 in the first round Friday at San Clemente Municipal Golf Course.

Sage Hill’s Matt Marlin and Darren Chen (totals of 174) finished tied for seventh, and Paul Chang (176) was 10th.

Eltamami will compete in the CIF Individual regionals on May 14 at Skylinks Golf Course.

Sunset League finals

MIRA LOMA — Newport Harbor High’s Brad Tapfer, Danny Willett and Carter Norris were among the top 16 Wednesday to move on to the league event’s second day at Goose Creek Golf Club.

Tapfer shot one-under-par 70 and is tied for third. Willett shot 75 and Norris carded a 76, which was the qualifying score.

Thursday’s top eight advance to CIF regional play.

Jacob Schulze of Huntington Beach and Edison’s Jack Koeller lead the field after both shot 68.

Missing the cut from Newport Harbor were Mason Moody (78), Landon Knight (78) and Tyler Tashiro (83).

BOYS’ TENNIS

Pacific Coast League finals

IRVINE — Corona del Mar High qualified two doubles teams for the semifinals during the first day Wednesday at Woodbridge High.

The duos of senior Alex Murray and freshman Henry Gordon, as well as junior Alec Adamson and sophomore Carson Williams, each advanced. Murray and Gordon, the No. 2 seeds, defeated a Woodbridge team in the first round, 8-3. In the quarterfinals they topped Jake DeVries and Jake Lafond of Woodbridge, 4-6, 6-4 and 10-7 in the third-set tiebreaker. Murray and Gordon will face University’s Skylar Butts and Konrad Koslowski, the No. 3 seeds, in the semifinals on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Adamson and Williams, the No. 4 seeds, defeated a team from University, 8-4, in the first round. In the quarterfinals they beat Eric Tseng and Issei Hasegawa of University, 6-2, 7-6. Adamson and Williams will face top-seeded Drew Dawson and Ryo Shimizu in the semifinals.

CdM freshman Chaz Downing lost in the singles quarterfinals to Reo Asami of University, 6-3, 6-4. Dan Anastos advanced to the consolation finals.

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High freshman Reese Stalder advanced to the singles semifinals with a pair of wins Wednesday at Huntington Beach High.

Stalder, the No. 3 seed, got past a player from Edison, 8-0, in the first round before beating a player from Los Alamitos, 6-1, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. He will play No. 2-seeded Camden Marco of Los Alamitos in the semifinals, which begin at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Newport Harbor’s Christian Lee advanced to the singles quarterfinals before falling to top-seeded John Lieu of Fountain Valley, 6-1, 6-3.

Academy League finals

NEWPORT BEACH — Sage Hill’s Robbe Simon, as well as the Lightning doubles team of Alex Manolakas and Eric Magliarditi, made the semifinals after day one of the individual tournament Wednesday at The Tennis Club.

Simon will face Whitney’s Ruthwick Pathireddy in a singles semifinal. Manolkas and Magliarditi will face Alastair Hurry and Alex Ramadan of St. Margaret’s in a doubles semifinal.

All semifinals begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, with the finals to follow at 5:30 p.m.

BASEBALL

Corona del Mar 5, Woodbridge 3

CORONA DEL MAR — Stanford-bound pitcher Andrew McCormack improved to 7-2 after his complete game in Pacific Coast League action Wednesday.

Max Stone went two for three with two runs batted in and Nick Roco was two for three with a double and one RBI for CdM (14-9, 7-5 in league), which is in third in league.

The Sea Kings face Woodbridge Friday at 3:15 p.m. at Ryan Lemmon Park in Irvine.
