Dries helps U.S. to gold medal in China

Former Laguna Beach High graduate Annika Dries scored two goals Sunday to help lead the U.S. Olympic women’s water polo team to a 6-4 victory over Australia in the gold medal game of the FINA World League Super Final at Changshu, China. Dries and Maggie Steffens tied for game-high scoring honors for the U.S.

The U.S. has won the FINA tournament in four consecutive years.

Dries also scored once Saturday during a 7-6 win over Greece in the semifinals, and posted two goals in a 15-2 win Friday over Italy. In pool play, the 20-year-old scored one goal against China in a 10-6 U.S. win May 29, and scored twice in a 17-3 win over Germany May 31. The U.S. also defeated Greece, 8-4, in pool play May 30.

Dries was named to the USA Olympic team May 17. The 2012 Summer Games start July 27 in London.

Team USA next will start a four-game exhibition series with Hungary on July 2. The opening game is at Stanford University. The teams will play July 4 at the USA Water Polo National Training Center in Los Alamitos, July 6 at a yet-to-be-determined site, and conclude with a July 8 game at Corona del Mar High that will be nationally televised by the NBC Sports Network.

The U.S. team will also make an appearance between 4 and 6 p.m. Sunday at the Athleta store at Fashion Island.

Jones, Horned Frogs take on UCLA

Keaton Jones, a 2011 graduate of Laguna Beach High and starting shortstop at Texas Christian University, will be in Westwood on Friday when the Horned Frogs (40-20) take on host UCLA (45-14) at 6 p.m. in the opening game of the best-of-three Super Regionals at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN. Jones drove in the tying run Monday against Mississippi as TCU went on to defeat the Rebels, 7-4, in the College Station Regional final to advance to the Super Regionals.

The second series game is 6 p.m. Saturday and will be televised by ESPN2. A third game, if necessary, is 7 p.m. Sunday and also will be televised by ESPN2.

The winner of the Super Regionals advances to the College World Series, which starts Thursday in Omaha.

Lewis second in Austria

Laguna Beach resident Michael Lewis earned a second-place finish Sunday at the Red Bull Ring at Spielberg, Austria. The 21-year-old, whose finish gained him championship points in the Formula 3 Euro Series, next will compete June 29-July 1 at the Norisring Race at Nuremberg, Germany.

Youth baseball camp starts Tuesday

Laguna Beach High’s baseball program will host a camp for youth ages 5 to 11, starting Tuesday at Skipper Carrillo Field. Camp runs between 5 to 7 p.m. daily through June 26. The cost is $180 per camper.

The program also will host a baseball camp for incoming players (grades 7-8) starting July 10 at Skipper Carrillo Field. The camp runs from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays through July 26. The cost is $180 per camper.

Softball academy registration open

Laguna Beach High softball Coach Alan Ludloff and collegiate player Kandy Francis will lead the Summer Softball Academy, starting July 10 at Thurston Middle School in Laguna Beach.

The camp runs from 1 to 3 p.m. each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, through Aug. 9, and has sessions for players ages 7 to 12 and 13 to 18. Space is limited.

Summer volleyball instruction offered

A summer volleyball camp run by Laguna Beach High boys’ volleyball head coach Scott Panaro starts Aug. 6. The dates for the three-camps series are Aug. 6-9, Aug. 13-16, and Aug. 20-23. Camps are from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dugger Gym on the Laguna campus and is open to players grades six through 12. The cost is $165 per camp. The Champions for Life Tennis and Swim Camp, and summer tennis workouts for Junior Tournament Players, both start June 25 and run through Aug. 13 at Alta Laguna Park in Laguna Beach. Tourney play continues June 16

The Laguna Open Volleyball Tournament resumes June 16 with the 54th annual Men’s Open. The tournament is seeking volunteers to serve as line judges during pool play and the playoffs. Volunteers will receive a T-shirt, gift certificate and front row seats to the tournament. Competition will take place in both AAA and Open level divisions.

The city’s summer volleyball schedule is as follows: June 16: Laguna Open Men’s; June 17: Laguna King and Queen of the Beach; July 5: Girls’ 14-and-Under Doubles; July 12: Girls 16U Doubles. Other upcoming tournaments scheduled include a men’s and women’s tournament in October, and the Polar Bear Men’s tournament in December.
