All-League Boys’ Volleyball: CdM’s Brown, Ctvrtlik share PCL MVP

Corona del Mar High senior outside hitter Parker Brown and senior setter Joe Ctvrtlik shared the Pacific Coast League MVP in boys’ volleyball after the Sea Kings repeated as undefeated league champions.

Joining Brown and Ctvrtlik on the first team are senior middle blockers Jack Reed and Remy Lamons. The quartet led CdM (25-7, 10-0 in league) to its second straight CIF Southern Section Division 2 title appearance.

The four also played in the 35th annual Dave Mohs Orange County High School All-Star Match for seniors.

Brown recorded a team-best 408 kills, to go along with 102 digs, 44 service aces and 21 blocks. This is the second time Brown has made the first team.

Brown, an All-CIF Southern Section Division 2 and All-Orange County first-team selection, is being courted by USC, Ohio State, UC Irvine and Pepperdine.

Ctvrtlik, who is bound Stanford, collected 891 assists, 61 digs, 56 blocks, 26 kills and 20 aces. He made All-CIF and first-team all-county.

Reed headed for UC Santa Barbara, finished with 222 kills, 84 blocks, 16 aces and 13 digs. He received fourth-team all-county honors.

Lamons had 155 kills, 58 blocks, 18 digs and 12 aces.

Senior outside hitter Kevin Gordinier, sophomore outside hitter Joey Martino and junior opposite James Christian made the second team.

Kawaguchi MVP

Sage Hill School junior setter Kent Kawaguchi earned the Academy League MVP in boys’ volleyball for the second straight season after leading the Lightning to their third league title in the program’s history.

Kawaguchi contributed in many facets, helping Sage Hill (19-11, 9-1 in league) claim its second league crown under Coach Dan Thomassen.

The Academy League Coach of the Year award went to Thomassen, who led the Lightning to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.

Kawaguchi, a repeat first-team selection, finished with 641 assists, 114 kills and 71 service aces.

Sage Hill had senior outside hitter Chris Zadra and junior middle blocker Creagan Lydon receive first-team accolades.

Zadra, a repeat first-team pick, recorded 522 kills, 44 blocks and 65 aces.

Lydon had 194 kills and 51 blocks.

Sophomore libero Nicky Bolous, junior opposite Kyle Jaffe made the second team.

Jack Burgi, a freshman outside hitter, was an honorable mention.

Gaitan earns honor

Senior outside hitter Dylan Gaitan was the lone Estancia High boys’ volleyball player to make first-team All-Orange Coast League.

Gaitan led the Eagles to a 3-7 record in league, one more win than in the previous season.

Estancia senior Riley Stack and Costa Mesa junior Noah JeyaRajah each earned second-team all-league honors.

The Mustangs finished 2-8 in league.

Laguna Beach’s Jack Winn was named the Orange Coast League MVP.
