U.S., Hungary to meet in polo series

The U.S. Olympic women’s water polo team, which includes Annika Dries of Laguna Beach, finishes pre-Olympics play by hosting Hungary in a four-game exhibition series starting Monday at Stanford University in Palo Alto. The second game is 7 p.m. Wednesday at Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos.

The teams also play July 6 at UC San Diego and conclude the series with a 3 p.m. July 8 match at Corona del Mar High. The July 8 match will be televised live on NBC Sports Network.

Pavlik, Kropp take Belmar Open

The top-ranked women’s team of Whitney Pavlik of Laguna Beach, and partner Jenny Kropp teamed last weekend to win the division title at the Belmar Open before a packed stadium at Belmar, N.J. The tournament is part of the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series. Pavlik and Kropp rallied to defeat the No. 6-seeded team of Raquel Ferreira and Kathryn Batt, 20-22, 21-12, 15-9, in the women’s final Sunday.

In the first tournament of the 2012 series, Pavlik and Kropp, the No. 2-seeded team, knocked off the No. 1-seeded team of Brooke Hansen and Lauren Fendrick to win the Florida Open at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on May 27. Pavlik and Kropp also defeated Hansen and Fendrick in the semifinals of the Belmar Open on Saturday.

The next series event is the Chicago Open from July 13-15.

Breakers continue summer hoops play

The Laguna Beach High boys’ basketball team won its third straight game in Godinez League summer play Monday by defeating Santa Ana Valley, 63-41. The Breakers previously scored league wins over Santa Ana (72-47) and Orange (62-32).

Laguna played four games last weekend at the Corona del Mar tournament. The Breakers were edged by Servite (43-41), defeated Mira Costa (55-50) and Saddleback Valley Christian (72-57), and lost to Santa Margarita (63-49).

“I thought we played some good teams, held our own and got better,” Laguna Coach Bret Fleming said of his team’s play at the Corona del Mar tournament. “ We played four games in two days with only eight guys. Everybody got a lot of playing time and played well. This is a fun group to coach and I think we’ll improve a great deal over the summer.”

Huntington duo wins Laguna Men’s title

Laguna Beach Open volleyball action returned June 16 with three tournaments at Main Beach, including the 57th annual Laguna Men’s Open. The team of Huntington Beach athletes Casey Patterson and Ryan Doherty won the title out of a deep and talented field that included 19 of the 40 AAA players, the highest rating for an amateur player. Patterson and Doherty defeated Matt Olson (Carlsbad) and Matthew Prosser (Encinitas) in the final.

Tennis, swim camps now open

The Champions for Life Tennis and Swim Camp, and summer tennis workouts for Junior Tournament Players, are open through Aug. 13 at Alta Laguna Park in Laguna Beach. Cardio Tennis sessions also are available at Alta Laguna Park.

Softball academy starts in July

Laguna Beach High softball Coach Alan Ludloff and collegiate player Kandy Francis will lead the Summer Softball Academy, starting July 10 at Thurston Middle School in Laguna Beach.

The camp runs from 1 to 3 p.m. each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, through Aug. 9, and has sessions for players ages 7 to 12 and 13 to 18. Space is limited.

Baseball registration open

Laguna Beach High’s baseball program will host a camp for incoming players (grades 7-8) starting July 10 at Skipper Carrillo Field. The camp runs from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays through July 26. The cost is $180 per camper.

Lance Stewart will instruct a series of summertime volleyball camps starting in July. The camps are as follows: Elementary Schools (July 30-Aug. 6); Middle School (July 16-Aug. 3); Incoming Freshmen through Seniors (July 16-Aug. 3); Incoming Freshmen through Seniors Strength and Conditioning (July 23-Aug. 17); Beach Volleyball (July 9-Aug. 24); VolleyballNOW Specialized Camps (July 21-22, 29, Aug. 4-5).

Summer volley sign-ups available

A summer volleyball camp run by Laguna Beach High boys’ volleyball Coach Scott Panaro starts Aug. 6. The dates for the three camps are Aug. 6-9, Aug. 13-16 and Aug. 20-23.

Camps are from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dugger Gym on the Laguna campus and are open to players grades six through 12. The cost is $165 per camp. Registration information can be found at https://www.lagunabeachcity.net.
