Team changes at Ocean View

Share

There’s going to be a new look to the Ocean View High football team this fall.

The Seahawks go into the start of preseason camp Monday under the direction of a new head coach with additional new members added to its coaching staff. Luis Nunez, who coached the Seahawks’ offensive line the past two years and also was the run-game coordinator, takes over the head role from Harold Eggers.

Prior to Ocean View, Nunez served on the varsity staff as offensive line coordinator Long Beach Wilson and South Gate. He also was the strength and conditioning coordinator at Wilson.

Nunez goes into his first year with five returning players from a 2011 team that finished second in the Golden West League, reached the CIF Southern Section Southern division playoffs, and won a postseason game for the first time in school history. The Seahawks defeated Santa Ana Valley, 26-21, in a first-round game. They ended the year 6-6 after a second-round loss to division runner-up Beckman.

Ocean View last year also finished third in Orange County, and 13th in the CIF-SS, in team rushing yards.

The Seahawks enter the new season looking to rebuild in the backfield. Quarterback/linebacker Timmy Robinson, last year’s Player of the Year in the Golden West League and first-team All-CIF, first-team all-league running back/linebacker Travis Sparks-Jackson, and Ben Sumner, the 2011 GWL Lineman of the Year and first-team All-CIF, graduated in June.

The Seahawks do return a trio of all-league players in defensive end Speiser Alani, offensive tackle Evan Perzanowski, and kicker Christian Negrete.

Players to watch: Evan Perzanowski, (OT, Jr.); Reo Washington, (WR/S, Sr.); Christian Negrete, (WR/S/K, Sr.); Rey Soria, (FB/DE, Sr.); Speiser Alani, (TE/DE, Sr.); Daniel Valencia, (RB/LB, Jr.); Tyler Clay, (WR/DB, Soph.); David Alani, (FB/LB, Soph.); Dallas Brogue, (QB, Sr.).

Coach’s outlook: “This team has very little varsity experience but is making up for the loss of key players by committing themselves to the team,” Nunez said. “The team has bought in to the team philosophy, ‘commitment to excellence through hard work.’ We will not replace a Timmy Robinson with one kid but with all 40 on the team pushing to get our weakest link stronger everyday. We’re fortunate to have great leaders as their commitment to hard work has been contagious to the rest of the program. Tons of personal records in the weight room as the team is the strongest it’s been as whole in a long time.

“Although we lack team speed and experience, I feel this team has the intangibles such as character to be competitive. We will continue to have the majority of our kids go both ways and hope to stay healthy but the future looks bright as the program is being revamped from the bottom up. Freshmen team has positive numbers for the first time in awhile, and the culture of working hard is evident. Much of success will rely on being able to run the football and get solid quarterback play from senior Dallas Brogue. We are going to keep it simple, but we will play to the whistle.”
