Laguna squad takes top honors at cheer camp

The Laguna Beach High varsity cheer squad took top honors recently at the UCA Cheer Camp. The four-day event was held at Loyola Marymount University. The squad, under the direction of Yvette Perez, took first-place awards in the Traditional Varsity category: Home Routine, Extreme Routine, Cheer, Most Spirited.

Kaleigh Bisconti, a recent graduate of Laguna Beach and a captain on the school’s 2011-2012 team, choreographed the Home Routine.

This year’s cheer squad features two seniors, two juniors, four sophomores and seven freshmen. The team will be captained in 2012-13 by Megan Cavanaugh, Kate Monahan and Sharlene Zarrabi. Team members also include Deja Whitney, Kamryn Bisconti, Abbey Huffer, Shelby Clark, Halie Willhoft, Sydney DeCarlo, Danielle Gee, Tori Pierson, Alexa Pidwell, Molly McMillen, Perry Nathanson, and Lor Scott. The team’s assistant coach is Summer Watson.

The team is seeking community sponsorships ($250, $500, $750 levels) to help defray uniform, equipment and competition costs. The deadline for sponsorship registration is Aug. 31. For information, contact Melissa Cavanaugh at melissacavanaugh@me.com, or (949) 697-1267.

Running event set for November

Registration is open to Laguna Beach residents for the 35th annual Dana Point Turkey Trot. The Nov. 22 event includes a 5K, 10K, Kids’ Gobble Wobble, a two-day health and fitness expo and finish line festival.
