SAN DIEGO — Sophomore Cameron Iwasa and freshman Gor Kirakosyan scored unassisted second-half goals to power the visiting Anteaters in their nonconference season opener Friday.

Iwasa found the net in the 48th minute and Kirakosyan added the clincher in the 89th minute.

Freshman Michael Breslin made three saves to preserve the shutout.

UCI plays host to Long Island in the Anteater Invitational on Friday at 7 p.m.

Kansas State def. UC Irvine

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Redshirt freshman Marisa Bubica posted a team-high nine kills for the Anteaters, who lost to No. 22-ranked Kansas State, 25-10, 25-18, 25-12, to open the season at the Varney Invitational.

Aly Squires and Taylor Smith each chipped in five kills. Kristin Winkler led all players with 15 digs, while Smith led UCI at the net with four blocks. Marissa Alvarez paced the team with 18 assists.

LA MIRADA — Freshman Sarah McKinny had 14 kills to lead Vanguard to a 23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-20 win over Concordia of Oregon in the Lions’ second match Saturday.

Sophomore Jessica Neves added 12 kills and sophomore setter Carly Maxwell had 47 assists for the Lions (4-3).

Sophomore Kendall Haldi had 14 kills to help lead Vanguard to a 22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-12 victory over Southern Oregon earlier in the day.

Neves and junior Grace Konstanzer had 11 kills each, while sophomore Ashli Bellinger contributed 10 kills for the Lions. Maxwell had 41 assists.
