Briefs: Pavlik adds to titles

UC Irvine graduate Whitney Pavlik and partner Jenny Knopp won their fifth Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball event in six tries this season on Sunday, claiming the top prize at the Manhattan Beach Open.

Pavlik and Knopp defeated Brooke Sweat and Jennifer Fopma, 21-17, 21-16, in the final to share the $11,000 first prize.

Pavlik had 12 kills and three aces in the final and finished with 37 kills and eight aces in three wins on Sunday.

Pavlik and Knopp also won the Manhattan Beach Open in 2011.

Pavlik and Knopp remain the top-ranked team on the domestic tour. They won Jose Cuervo series events this season in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Belmar, N.J., Chicago and Hermosa Beach. They were third at the Milwaukee event.

Pavlik and Knopp will play in the series’ national championship at the Huntington Beach Open on Sept. 21-23. First, they also plan to play in the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Open in Cincinnati, Friday through Sunday.

Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb and Corona del Mar resident Sean Rosenthal, who represented the United States in the London Olympics, were defeated in the men’s quarterfinals on Sunday near the Hermosa Beach Pier.

Sea Kings remain No. 1

Corona del Mar High remains the No. 1-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Southern Division football poll.

The Sea Kings, who won the Southern Division crown in 2011, open their season Friday against Laguna Hills at Newport Harbor High at 7 p.m.

Estancia is ranked No. 4 in the Southern Division. The Eagles, who reached the Southern Division semifinals last season, open the 2012 campaign Friday at home against Loara at 7 p.m.

Newport Harbor is ranked No. 9 in the Southwest Division. The Sailors kick off the 2012 season on Thursday at home against Trabuco Hills at 7 p.m.

Local runners ranked

The Corona del Mar High girls’ cross country team is ranked No. 6 in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preseason poll.

The Sage Hill School boys’ team is ranked No. 7 in Division 5 and the Newport Harbor girls are ranked No. 9 in Division 2.
