Locals well represented in CIF polls

Several local prep teams head into the fall season with preseason CIF Southern Section rankings.

In this week’s football polls, Edison is ranked second and Huntington Beach No. 8 in the Southwest Division. In last week’s preseason poll, Edison was also ranked second and Huntington was No. 3. The Oilers fell five spots after dropping their opener Aug. 23 to El Toro.

In girls’ volleyball, Edison is third in Division 1-AA and Ocean View is No. 7 in Division 4-AA.

In boys’ water polo, Ocean View is third in Division 7.

In cross-country, Edison is ranked ninth and Marina No. 10 in the girls’ Division 1 poll.

NSSA competitions start up

The first two events of the 2012-13 National Scholastic Surfing Assn.’s Southwest Conference Explorer Season were held Saturday and Sunday at the Huntington Beach Pier.

Local surfers took top honors at both competitions. Event No. 1 winners from Huntington Beach were: Bryce Marino (Explorer Juniors); Rick Fignetti (Explorer Super Seniors, Explorer Duke). Event No. 2 winners from Huntington Beach were: Dylan Aragon (Explorer Juniors); Rick Fignetti (Explorer Super Seniors, Explorer Duke).

The NSSA Southwest Conference Open Season starts Sept. 8-9 at the pier.

Teams claim Pony Baseball titles

The 2012 summer season at Fountain Valley Pony Baseball has come to a close. During the regular season, the following six teams won their respective division titles: Angels (Pony), Rangers (Bronco Major), Tigers (Bronco Minor), Rangers (Mustang Major), Cardinals (Mustang Minor) and Tigers (Pinto Major). The league’s Pinto A All-Star team finished runner-up to the 2012 Zone/World Series tournament championship.

Surf series event coming to the Pier

The second event of the three-part American Pro Surfing Series will take place Sept. 20-26 at the Huntington Beach Pier.

The third series event, Oct. 31-Nov. 7, also is at the pier. Four-man heats make up the contest format with 64 men and 16 women starting the competition.

The contest format will be four-man heats with 50% elimination, starting with 64 men and 16 women. The prize purse is $10,000 for the men and $2,000 for the women.
