Briefs: OCC kickoff changed

The Orange Coast College football game against Long Beach on Saturday has been changed to a 6 p.m. kickoff at Veterans Stadium.

The nonconference game was originally scheduled for 1 p.m., but the change was made in an effort to avoid predicted extreme mid-day temperatures.

UCI’s Nelson honored

UC Irvine senior Rex Nelson has been named the Big West Conference Athlete of the Week in men’s cross country following his season-opening performance Saturday.

Nelson, a Newport Harbor High product, finished second among 229 runners in the UC Irvine Invitational with a time of 24 minutes, 57.5 seconds over the 8,000-meter course at the Anteater Recreation Center Fields.

His showing helped the ‘Eaters to a fourth-place finish in the 19-team field.

This is the second career Big West weekly cross country honor for Nelson.

Goodson stands out

Former UC Irvine All-American CoCo Goodson scored ghe game-winning goal in the 79th minute for her Dutch team FC Twente in an Eredivisie League match agaisnt Ajax on Friday [Sept. 7].

Goodson, a two-time All-American and Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Year as an Anteater in 2011 and 2010, scored on a header to help FC Twente move into first place in the BeNe Orange division.

Goodson, a rookie in the Dutch professional league, was drafted No. 12 overall by the Philidelphia Independence of Women’s Professional Soccer, but the league suspended operations soon thereafter.

Former UCI goalkeeper Danielle de Seriere, is a backup goalie for FC Twente.
