College Roundup: UCI edges Missouri State

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Freshman Pavle Atanackovic scored twice within a span of 105 seconds to erase a 2-0 deficit and help the Anteaters earn a tie in the Lobo Invitational at the University of New Mexico on Friday.

Atanackovic, who entered the game in the 74th minute, scored 109 seconds later to pull UCI (3-2-1) within 2-1.

Atanackovic then headed in a Gor Kirakosyan cross to finalize the scoring. Two 10-minute overtime periods failed to break the deadlock

Missouri State (4-0-3) took just two shots in the first half, but led, 1-0, at intermission.

UCI finished with a 23-8 advantage in shots, including eight from sophomore Cameron Iwasa.

Michael Breslin had three saves for UCI, which plays No. 7-ranked New Mexico on Sunday at noon.

COLUMBIA, Ky. — The visiting Lions posted a 14-9 shot advantage against the NAIA’s top-ranked team, but couldn’t find the net in the nonconference game Friday.

The Blue Raiders have now won 30 straight matches.

Kevin Cornwall had seven shots for the Lions (1-5-1), who surrendered an unassisted goal in the 30th minute for the difference in the game.

Kyle O’Brien and Sam Nicholson had three shots apiece for Vanguard.

Arizona Desert Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. — Freshman Marisa Bubica had a career-high 20 kills to lead UC Irvine to a 23-25, 25-12, 25-13, 25-16 triumph over American in the second of two matches on Friday at the University of Arizona.

Bubica, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter, added five digs and three blocks to help UCI improve to 5-7.

Junior Aly Squires, who had 10 kills in a 26-24, 25-17, 25-17 loss to host Arizona earlier Friday, had 17 kills and hit .351 against American.

Senior Kristin Winkler had 18 digs against American (6-4), which hit .008 as a team.

Santiago Canyon 2, Orange Coast 0

COSTA MESA — The defending Orange Empire Conference champion visitors netted their two goals in the fist 25 minutes to prevail on Friday.

Sarah MacArthur and Emma Pridmore had two shots apiece to lead the Pirates (4-2, 0-2 in conference), who received seven saves from Katelyn O’Banion.

Bianca Frontino, the conference MVP in 2011, had a goal and an assist for the Hawks (6-0, 2-0).

OCC visits Riverside City College on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Pepperdine 4, UC Irvine 0

LOS ANGELES — The Anteaters were blanked for the second straight game, the first back-to-back shutouts since the first two matches of the 2007 season, to drop the first of two games at the UCLA Invitational on Friday.

UCI (3-6), which was trounced, 4-0, at Denver on Sunday, allowed three second-half goals and Pepperdine (6-2) finished with a 15-6 advantage in shots.

No Anteater had more than one shot.

UCI concludes tournament play against Princeton on Sunday at 4 p.m.
