Defense leads the way for Green Chargers

The Huntington Beach Jr. Midget Division Green Chargers picked up their fourth victory of the season Saturday by blanking the Tustin Cobras, 28-0, at Tustin.

Chase Ault and Daniel Serrano did the scoring for Huntington, which ran its record to 4-0. The Green Chargers offensive line blew open big holes for the run game, with Cole Pelkoffer, Jon Moreida, Paul Rogers, Zane Webster and Derrick Weinheimer delivering key blocks.

The Green Chargers are home Saturday to the South Coast Tritons (3-1). Kickoff is at noon at Edison High.

Pee Wee Division

Huntington 22, Lakewood 8: The Green Chargers (2-2) used touchdown runs by Parker Thomas and Kishaun Sykes, a kickoff return for a touchdown by Jaden MacNeil, and a tough defense, to defeat the host Lancers at Lakewood High.

Huntington’s defense didn’t allow a point, as Lakewood scored its touchdown on an interception return early in the game.

The Green Chargers host the Santa Margarita Stallions on Saturday at Edison High.

Junior Pee Wee Division

Huntington 28, Tustin 0: Tanner Nelson scored two touchdowns and Jack Horton and Cameron Eden also reached the end zone as the Green Chargers (3-1) shutout of the Gold Cobras at Tustin.

The Huntington defense limited Tustin to just one first down. Nicholas Upstill, who had four receptions total 40 yards on offense, had an interception, and Cameron Mase and Trent Fletcher also keyed the defense.

Huntington hosts the Santa Ana Monarchs at 8 a.m. Saturday at Edison High.

Mighty Mite Division

Santa Margarita 14, Gold Chargers 0: Defense dominated much of Saturday’s game at Santa Margarita High where the host Eagles earned the victory by scoring a pair of touchdowns in the second half.

In the first half, Huntington (2-2) managed just 33 yards and two first downs, while the Eagles mustered only 21 yards and a pair of first downs.

The Gold Chargers host the Saddleback Valley White Bears at 10 a.m. Saturday at Edison High.

Saddleback Valley 18, Green Chargers 13: Huntington held the lead at the half but the Bears used a punt return for a touchdown in the second half to take the lead for good at Laguna Hills High.

The Green Chargers (3-1) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a touchdown run by Dane Despars and extra-point reception by Joey Valenta. They held a 7-6 lead at the half but the Bears turned a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown, and a scoring run, to build an 18-7 lead with five minutes left. Jordan Ginnis brought Huntington to within 18-13 when he returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

The Green Chargers next play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Anaheim against the Anaheim Gold Rams.

Jr. All-American FootballClinic Division

South Orange County 25, Huntington 14: The Oilers trailed, 25-0, fought back in the fourth quarter, only to fall short against the Patriots.

Zack Pratte put Huntington on the scoreboard when he took a handoff on a reverse, went around right end and raced 62 yards for a touchdown with less than three minutes remaining in game. Quarterback Nate Skorheim ran in the conversion to cut the Patriots’ lead to 25-7.

Aden Eckenwiler put the Oilers in scoring position on their next series when he returned a kickoff to the South County one-yard line. On the next play, Skorheim ran in for a score. He then hit Jonah Del Rosario on a conversion pass, to make it 25-14 with less than a minute to play.

Trent Klasson rushed for 19 yards on five carries for the Oilers.

Jr. Midget Division

Baldwin Hills 39, Huntington 0: The Oilers found the going tough Saturday in losing to the Bruins. Reid Banish and Jerry Hudson both gave strong performances for the Oilers.
