High School Roundup: Sage earns share of league title

IRVINE — Freshman Michelle Chen shot two-over-par 38 to earn medalist honors and lead the Lightning to a share of the Academy League title with the Tartans Wednesday at Strawberry Farms Golf Course.

It was the first time Sage Hill beat St. Margaret's in the program's history, Lightning Coach Nicole Middaugh said.

Sophomore Stephanie Cho shot 39, while senior Angela Choi (44) and Kathleen Huang (51) also scored for Sage Hill, which lost to St. Margaret's last week by 29 strokes.

NEWPORT BEACH — Freshman Amy Matsuoka shot three-over-par 38 for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match at Newport Beach Country Club Wednesday.

Avery French of Dana Hills shot 37 to earn medalist honors.

Karlie Moses (40), Emily Turner (41), Anne Kim (46) and Lauren Nakamura (47) also scored for CdM (6-7), which plays against Beckman Thursday at Newport Beach Country Club.

IRVINE — Hayley Hodson had eight kills to help lead the Sea Kings to a 25-20, 26-24, 25-9 Pacific Coast League win Wednesday.

Grace Kennedy had eight kills and 10 digs, Brooke Dunning had seven blocks and Kelsey Humphreys had 27 assists for CdM (13-4, 5-0 in league).

Hodson had 12 kills in the Sea Kings' 25-17, 25-19, 25-13 PCL win against visiting Woodbridge Tuesday. Humphreys had 19 assists.



Newport Harbor 11, Edison 7

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior Curtis Fink scored five goals for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Wednesday at Newport Harbor High.

Blake Grove added two goals for the Sailors (14-2, 2-0 in league). Dan Stevens, Ryan Warde, Henry McNamara and Clay Davison added single goals for the Sailors, ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Wyatt Muller had four saves for Newport Harbor, which plays at El Toro on Saturday at 1 p.m.


Costa Mesa 15, Godinez 7

SANTA ANA — Quinn Stone scored five goals for the Mustangs in the Orange Coast League game Wednesday at Santa Ana Valley High.

Quinn Smith added four goals and Deighton Tachiki-Urias had three goals for Costa Mesa (10-2, 3-0 in league), while goalie James Rydjeski made 10 saves.


Laguna Beach 26, Estancia 5

COSTA MESA — Jacob Sperling scored three goals for the Eagles in the Orange Coast league game Wednesday.

Goalie Garrett Henscheid made four saves, while Hayden Swift and Riley Brockman scored one goal each for Estancia (4-10, 0-3 in league).



Corona del Mar 10, Troy 8

FULLERTON — The Sea Kings' Siena Sharf and Sophia Chen swept in doubles and beat the Warriors' No. 1 team, 6-4, to earn the clinching 10th set in the nonleague match Wednesday.

The No. 3 doubles team of Kimmia Naaseh and Taylor Fogarty and the No. 1 doubles team of Riley Gerdau and Kenzie Purcifull also produced wins to help CdM (10-4) overcome an 8-7 deficit.

The Sea Kings play host to Northwood Thursday at 3 p.m.
