College Roundup: OCC's Sanchez scores hat trick


Orange Coast 6, Norco 1

COSTA MESA — Freshman forward Jorge Sanchez, a Costa Mesa High product, recorded a natural hat trick to lead the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Tuesday.

Sanchez scored the first three goals of the game, then added a pair of assists to help the Pirates (9-3-3, 5-2-2 in conference) open a six-goal lead.

Sophomore Baji Chela had two goals and one assist, while sophomore Brandon Bauman had three assists for the winners.

Sanchez has 14 goals this season and Bauman has 19 assists.

Norco is 4-10-2, 2-6-1.



Orange Coast 3, Santa Ana 0

SANTA ANA — Freshman forward Courtney Garrity scored two goals and sophomore Emma Pridmore had a goal and an assist for the visiting Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Tuesday.

Sophomore Katelyn O'Banion made four saves to preserve the shutout for OCC (13-3, 9-3 in conference), ranked No. 10 in Southern California.

Santa Ana is 3-12-2, 2-8-2.



Bill Cullum Invitational

SIMI VALLEY — Junior Travis Russell shot seven-under-par 209 over 54 holes to finish third and lead UC Irvine to a third-place finish in the event concluded Tuesday at Wood Ranch Golf Club.

The Anteaters shot three--under 285 in the final round to record a 54-hole total of 872, 22 shots behind victorious San Diego.

Russell, a Newport Harbor High product, shot four-under 68 in the final round.

Arizona State's Jon Rahm Rodriguez (204) was medalist.

Allan Jun (19th at 220), Michael Yang (23rd at 221), and Pete Fernandez (29th at 222) also stood out for UCI.



Biola def. Vanguard

COSTA MESA — Jessica Neves had 18 kills and 28 assists for the Lions but No. 4 Biola won in four, 25-17, 25-16, 30-32, 25-23 on Tuesday at Vanguard.

Sarah McKinny added 10 kills for No. 21 Vanguard (15-10, 5-4 in conference). Newport Harbor product Kelly Heenan led Vanguard with 26 digs.

Christine Douglas had a match-high 21 kills for Biola, which is now 22-2, 8-1.
