Ocean View gets in league title hunt with big victory

A big win on the road Tuesday kept the Ocean View High boys' water polo team in the hunt for the Golden West League championship.

The Seahawks outscored host Segerstrom, 2-1, in the final quarter to come away with a 5-4 victory over the Jaguars. Glenn Baumann scored a game-high four goals, Cody Basford scored once and Brian Smith had six saves for the Seahawks, who moved into a tie with Segerstrom for first place. Both teams are 6-1 in league.

Huntington Beach was tied for first place in Sunset League action after the Oilers took down Marina, 20-2, on Oct. 17.

Jovan Jeremic netted seven goals, Matt Cook and Daniel Stephens scored three and two goals, respectively, and Alex Wolf had 10 saves for the Oilers, who share the league lead with Newport Harbor.

The Sailors also improved to 3-0 in league scored a 14-2 win over Fountain Valley (1-2). In the other league game Oct. 17, Los Alamitos (2-1) was a 16-2 winner over Edison (1-2).


Girls' Volleyball

Huntington Beach moved into sole possession of second place in the Sunset League on Tuesday after taking down visiting Newport Harbor, 25-23, 25-23, 28-26. Kendra Koelsch, Amanda Linzmeyer, Ally Forsberg and Megan Gibbs each had nine kills, Kelynn Mullally added 18 digs and Tara Stuhr had 32 assists for the Oilers.


Field Hockey

Huntington Beach was handed its first loss in Sunset League play Tuesday by Newport Harbor, which edged the Oilers, 2-1. Kayla Wigney scored the lone goal for defending-champion Huntington.

In previous league games, the Oilers blanked both Westminster (3-0) and Edison (1-0). Kalya Winsatt scored twice and Abby Masters once in the win over Westminster. Wigney scored in the win over Edison.

Huntington completes league play at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at Marina. The postseason starts next week.
