OCC women capture State cross-country title

State championships

FRESNO — Orange Coast College claimed the team title, led by freshman Karen Silvas, who finished eighth.

Silvas completed the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 37.77 seconds to help the Pirates produce 79 points, 21 better than runner-up Glendale.

Freshman Leanne Allen (16th in 18:58.93), sophomore Chelsea Clifford (18:59.64), sophomore Camille Garcia (21st in 19:07.08), freshman Nirseen Rizk (23rd in 19:08.72), freshman Raeanna Cortez (31st in 19:20.40) and sophomore Maria Matias (43rd in 19:36.31) were also in the top 50 for OCC.

NAIA championships

VANCOUVER, Wash. — Vanguard University senior Megan Williams finished 86th, completing the 5,000-meter course in 19:20 at the Fort Vancouver National Site on Saturday.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

State championships

FRESNO — Freshman Luis Morales finished fourth individually to lead Orange Coast College to a third-place finish on Saturday at Woodward Park.

Morales completed the four-mile course in 20 minutes, 19.33 seconds. Matt Airola of American Rivera won in 10:10.68.

Sophomore Barron Maizland (29th in 20:58.60), freshman Jay Bonthius (31st in 21:02.21), freshman Jace Hinesly (35th in 21:09.11) and freshman Felix Cruz (63rd in 21:31.12) also stood out for the Pirates.

OCC totaled 158 points, bested only by American River (84) and Glendale (96).

NAIA championships

VANCOUVER, Wash. — Vanguard University sophomore Cameron Barela finished 12th and sophomore teammate Tyler Dutchover was 251st at the Fort Vancouver National Site on Saturday.

Barela completed the 8,000-meter course in 24:51 55 seconds off the pace of individual winner John Gilbertson from The Master’s.

Dutchover’s time was 27:40.

MEN’S WATER POLO

State tournament

PLEASANT HILL — Newport Harbor High product David Jorth scored two goals to help Golden West College defeat host Diablo Valley, 16-10, to win the California Community College Athletic Assn. championship on Saturday.

Jorth, a sophomore for the Rustlers, helped the team finish 25-0.

Ali Marks, a freshman out of Corona del Mar High, is also on the roster for Golden West, which is coached by Scott Taylor, a former Costa Mesa High star goalie who later became the Mustangs’ head coach.

MEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 2, Oxnard 1

OXNARD — The visiting Pirates overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Assn. Southern California Regional playoffs on Saturday.

Frankie Munoz tied the score in the 70th minute, then Baji Chela netted the game-winner in the 75th minute as OCC snapped Oxnard’s 12-match unbeaten streak.

With the win, OCC (12-5-4) advances to meet Chaffey (15-4-2) at Chaffey in Tuesday’s second round.

Chaffey defeated Santa Barbara, 2-1, in overtime Saturday.

Oxnard (16-6-1) was the No. 4 SoCal seed. Chaffey is seeded No. 5. OCC is the No. 13 seed.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Nevada 72, UC Irvine 49

IRVINE — The host Anteaters shot just 26.9% from the field and were outrebounded, 58-35, in the nonconference game Saturday.

Camille Buckley and Mokun Fajemisin each had eight points and combined for 11 rebounds to pace the Anteaters (0-3).

Nevada is 2-1.
