Girls' Basketball Previews

The 2012-13 girls' basketball season got underway this week for several local teams, while several others, make their debuts next week.

The following is a capsule look for the local girls' teams:

Brethren Christian Warriors

League: Academy

Head coach: Jeff Wallace (5th year)

2011-12 record: 19-10

2012 league finish: 6-5 (third)

2012 CIF results: Reached second round Division 5-AA playoffs.

Returning starters: None.

The roster: Abby Luce, Sr.; Annie Huie, Sr.; Jessica Wayland, Sr.: Courtney Okwudibonye, Jr.; Grace Okwudibonye, Jr.; Lisa Hobson, Soph.; Bria Gamble, Fr.; Cammy Mahoney, Fr.; Chelsea De La Cruz, Fr.; Hannah Montano, Fr.; Kendall Strabala, Fr.; Sierra Whitmire, Fr.

Team notes: The Warriors, without any returning starters from last year's playoff team, are starting from scratch. The team last year won the Max Preps Holiday Classic in Palm Springs, and finished third at the Orangewood Academy tournament. The Warriors are entered in both tournaments next month (December). BC also will add two transfer students to its roster in February.

Coach's outlook: "This is the ultimate example of a rebuilding year, if there ever was one," Wallace said. "We've lost our first eight players from last year's depth chart."

Season opener: Monday vs. Tarbut V'Torah.

Edison Chargers

League: Sunset

Head coach: Dan Wiley (5th year; 101-20)

2011-12 record: 23-4

2012 league finish: 9-1 (co-champion)

2012 CIF results: Reached Division 1-AA quarterfinals

Returning starters: Geena Gomez (PG, all-league, Sr.).

The roster: Riley Lowe (G, Sr.); Loli Gomez (Wing, Jr.); Krista Luciani (Wing, Jr.); Marlies DeJong (Wing, Soph.); Erin Hitomi (G, Soph.); Alyssa Atencio (G, Fr.); Jackie Bento (Wing, Fr.); Justine Modde (Wing, Fr.).

Team notes: The Chargers have been atop the Sunset League standings the last five years and won the CIF Southern Section Division 1-A title in 2010. They lost four all-league and an All-CIF player from last year's 23-4 team. The lone returnee is Gomez, an all-league senior point guard who last week signed with St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. Gomez is the school-record holder for assists (16) in a single game.

Coach's outlook: "We have a very young team, [a] senior point guard (Gomez) returning, and three good, incoming freshmen with solid returnees who will surprise a lot of teams."

Huntington Beach Oilers

League: Sunset

Head coach: Russ McClurg (10th year, 177-79)

2012 league finish: 9-1 (co-champion)

2012 CIF results: Runner-up to Division 1-A title

Returning starters: Paola Roa (PG, all-league, All-CIF, Jr.); Jill Nakaso (F, second-team all-league, Sr.); Stephanie Louie (G, second-team all-league, Jr.).

The roster: Anna Bullock (Fr.); Samantha Gray (Fr.); Caitlyn Nojiri (Fr.); Morgan Potter (Soph.); Kaitlyn Rodriguez (Soph.); Lisa Roa (Sr.); Jenni Rulon (Jr.); Emily Vaught (Sr.).

Team notes: The Oilers turned in an amazing season last year, one that took them to Anaheim Arena and a spot in the CIF Southern Section Division 1-A title game. It was the program's first title-game appearance since 1978. Three starters are back from a squad that shared the 2012 Sunset League title with Edison. The Oilers must fill the void created by graduated All-CIF players (school scoring and three-pointers made leader Kelsey Minato, Maya Kennedy) who have taken their games to the next level. The Oilers have been hit early by injury. McClurg said Paola Roa suffered a "severe" ankle sprain and will not play the first part of the season, and that Gray, a projected starter, suffered an ACL injury during the summer. Pau McClurg predicted the 2013 Sunset race to be the "most competitive in years."

Coach's outlook: "I think we will be very competitive in league," McClurg said. "I have four freshman playing varsity which makes us very young. I have a great group of girls and I am excited about the future and continuing the Huntington Beach tradition."

Season opener: Monday, 3 p.m., vs. Schurr, Barons Hoops Challenge.

Marina Vikings

League: Sunset

Head coach: Carol Osbrink (1st year)

Team notes: The Vikings start their initial season under Osbrink who last year was the junior varsity head coach and served as school principal 1994-2002. Osbrink also served as president of the Sunset League (1998-2002), on the CIF Southern Section Council (1998-2002), and on the CIF Blue Book Committee (2002-2008).
