High School Roundup: Estancia runs past Costa Mesa

CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Frida Ramos came off the bench to give the Estancia High girls' basketball team a spark against rival Costa Mesa in a consolation semifinal of the Corona del Mar Tip-Off Classic Thursday at CdM.

She contributed eight steals and four points to help lead the Eagles to a 55-45 win.

"She didn't play in the first two games," Estancia co-coach Xavier Castellano said of Ramos. "She came in midway through the third quarter and she just changed the game."

Senior Celia Duran had 16 points and six assists, freshman Neffertiti Van Den Heever added 14 points, freshman Maya Van Den Heever scored nine points and Giana Jason grabbed 14 rebounds for the Eagles (2-1).

Estancia dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Mustangs, 23-7.

"We put the pressure on," Castellano said.

Alexa Loredo and Aubriona Mathis scored 10 points each for Costa Mesa.

The Eagles play in the consolation championship Saturday at 4 p.m. at Northwood.



Garden Grove 35, Newport Harbor 33

CORONA DEL MAR — Freshman McKenna Izzi scored 14 points, including two three-pointers, for the Sailors in a consolation game of the CdM Tip-Off Classic Thursday.

Junior Jennifer Lopez added 11 points with one three pointer and junior Bella Raimondi had four points for Newport Harbor (0-3), which rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Izzi's three-pointer with 20 seconds left gave the Sailors a one-point lead, Newport Harbor Coach Justin Long said. But Garden Grove responded with a three-pointer and the Sailors' last second-shot hit the back of the rim.



Estancia 74, Santa Ana Valley 50

GARDEN GROVE — Ben Beck scored 24 points and Josh Mendoza added 23 points for the Eagles in a consolation game of the Orangewood Academy tournament Thursday.

Matt Jarmacz grabbed 11 rebounds and Chad Fackler had six points, nine rebounds and eight assists for Estancia (1-2), which plays in another consolation game on Saturday.

The Eagles opened the season with a 55-51 loss to Workman on Tuesday, when Mendoza scored 15 points and Jarmacz had 13 points.

Estancia lost to Saddleback Christian, 77-44, Wednesday night, when Mendoza scored 20 points and Beck had 13 points.



Corona del Mar 72, San Gorgonio 28

SAN BERNARDINO — Junior forward Kevin Manchester finished with 12 points and seven rebounds in the Sea Kings' season opener on Thursday.

Blake Grable contributed 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Max Stone had 12 points and two three-pointers.

The Sea Kings have their first annual Beach Bash tournament on Tuesday. CdM opens the eight-team tournament against Long Beach Wilson at 3:30 p.m.


Costa Mesa 59, Santa Ana 50

WESTMINSTER — Sean Comer had 25 points, five assists, five steals and four rebounds for the Mustangs in a Bronze Division game at La Quinta High Thursday.

Andrew Wright had 14 points. He hit four of five three-point attempts and Daniel Azurian added 11 points for Costa Mesa (1-2), which plays against La Quinta Friday at 7:45 p.m. at La Quinta.



Sage Hill 6, Capistrano Valley Christian 0

NEWPORT COAST — Kavi Sakraney had two goals and one assist for the Lightning in their season opener Thursday.

Nikolai Sadeghi scored two goals, Dakshin Jandhyala contributed one goal and assist, Zack Burns had one goal and Jacob Rosenberg had an assist.

Will Burns and Brett Dunlavey played well as center defenders and Adam Ellingson earned Sage Hill a shutout.

The Lightning play at Huntington Beach Friday at 3 p.m.



Benson Cup

Costa Mesa scored a 14-13 win over Granite Hills in overtime and lost to Yorba Linda, 14-8, Thursday.

Goalie Kaitlyn Hill had 11 saves, two coming on five-meter penalty shots against Granite Hills. Aubry Hill and Kellie Thorsness scored five goals each and Alicia Rederscheid and Lauren Smith each had two goals.

The Mustangs overcame a 12-9 deficit in the fourth quarter. Ashley Tfaye won the sprint in overtime and delivered the assist to Thorsness or for the game-winning goal that came in overtime.

Hill had 14 saves against Yorba Linda. Lauren Smith had three goals and three assists, and Thorsness scored two goals.

Costa Mesa will face Mira Costa Friday at 5 p.m. at Esperanza High.
