NJB teams score victories

The Laguna Beach girls’ Division 1 team got its 2012-13 season off to a winning start Saturday by defeating Laguna Hills Team 1, 37-19, in National Junior Basketball action at Thurston Middle School in Laguna Beach.

Laguna Beach got off to a slow start and trailed, 12-6, after the first quarter. They rallied behind a tough defense and balanced scoring and pulled away in the second half.

Sophia Lucas led Laguna Beach with nine points. Nicole Davidson scored eight points and had five steals and both Madison Sinclair and Rachel Kinney scored six points.

The Breakers travel Saturday to Aliso Niguel High to take on the Niguel Aliso Bruins.

Boys’ Division 2

Laguna Beach Team No. 2, 45, Laguna Hills 35: The Breakers, despite not having a full roster for the game, got off to a fast start, were aggressive on the boards and recorded their initial win by defeating the Lakers at Laguna Hills.

Nicholas Lucas scored 20 points for the Breakers. Aiden Blanton and Max Schuster both scored eight points, Beck Kesler had three points and both Daniel Kimball and Sammer Tarazi scored two points.

Boys’ Division 3

Laguna Beach 66, Laguna Hills 44: The Breakers moved their record to 2-0 behind a balanced scoring attack in cruising past the Bulls.

Five Breakers scored in double figures led by 14 points from Nolan Naess. Jack Payne scored 12 points, Gavin Trevino and Keegan Even both had 11 points, and Will Compton scored 10 points. Point guards Alex Nuefeld and Griffin Kristensen directed the Laguna offense.
