High School Roundup: Marina tourney coming

Eighteen CIF Southern Section boys' soccer teams will be in Huntington Beach next week to compete at the 26th annual Marina Holiday Classic.

Host Marina, Huntington Beach, Ocean View and Fountain Valley, are the local schools entered in the tournament. Opening pool-play games begin at 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 27. The 18 teams will be divided into five pools of three teams each.

Marina entered the week 6-1-1 overall and finished in second place Dec. 13 at the Aliso Cup. Senior Dakoda Muta leads the Vikings in scoring with seven goals. Junior Christian Cordell is next with three goals and also has two assists in eight games.

Marina defeated Sunset League rival Fountain Valley in last year's final of the Holiday Classic.

"We are very excited to host the classic," Marina Coach Jeff Schofield said. "We have a lot of returning teams and as always, the Sunset League is very well represented with five teams. Also returning are Ocean View, which went to the CIF quarterfinals last year, Westminster, and Fullerton. There are some strong new teams including Redondo, Colton and Garey from out of Orange County."

Girls' Soccer

Fountain Valley scored a 3-0 nonleague win Monday over Woodbridge. The Barons took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal from Kasey Reeve assisted by Madison Gomez. In the second half, a pass from Reeve set up a score by Dakota Griggs, and Gomez punched in the third goal.

Girls' Water Polo

Huntington Beach Coach Brian Anderson served as lead coach for the 2012 USA Water Polo Holiday Camp. More than 100 athletes, 25 coaches and 20 officials, attended the camps held Dec. 6-10 (girls) and Dec. 13 through Sunday (boys), in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Anderson coached seventh- and eighth-grade athletes.

"It's fantastic to be recognized by USA Water Polo for our efforts at Huntington Beach High School and the Huntington Beach Water Polo Club, and to be selected to lead the camp," Anderson said. "It is an honor to represent USA Water Polo."

Huntington, ranked No. 10 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, plays a nonleague game Friday at home against Santa Margarita. The Oilers have been led this season by Hana Lambur, who has signed with San Diego State, and UC Davis signee Samantha Preston.

Edison traveled to Santa Barbara last weekend for a trio of games against ranked Division 1 nonleague opponents.

The Chargers, ranked No. 8 in Division I, started the three-game schedule Friday with a match at Santa Barbara, the second-ranked team in Division 1, and fell, 14-7, to the Dons. Sabrina Jensen came off the bench to score a team-high four goals, Melissa Balding scored twice, Dana Kerins scored once, and Josette Santos had 12 saves.

Edison played two games on Saturday. In a morning game against ninth-ranked San Marcos, the Chargers outscored the Royals, 6-1, in the fourth quarter, to earn a 10-6 victory. Lyndsie Williams scored three goals, Balding and Risa Burke both scored twice, and Santos had nine saves.

Less than two hours later, Edison battled seventh-ranked Dos Pueblos, which upended the Chargers, 11-5. Balding led Edison with two goals and Santos registered 11 saves.

"It was such a great weekend for the girls," Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. "We played three of the top Division 1 teams in less than 24 hours, which is no easy task."

Serra of Gardena, which defeated Edison, 27-10, on Dec. 8, to win the South Division, captured the CIF State Division II championship Saturday by routing North Division champion Oakdale, 42-15, at The Home Depot Center in Carson.
