Girls’ Basketball Roundup: Edison holding on to lead

Heading into the final week of the regular season, the Sunset League girls’ basketball championship was still up for grabs.

After Monday, it was down to a two-team race between Edison and Los Alamitos, teams that shared the league’s top spot with one game to play. The Sunset schedule was completed Wednesday, but scores from all three games weren’t available at press time.

Edison maintained its hold on a piece of the lead Monday by defeating rival Fountain Valley, 62-55. Four-year varsity player Riley Lowe came up “huge” on senior night, Chargers Coach Dan Wiley said. The senior guard drained five three-point shots and finished with a career-high 16 points, to go along with nine rebounds.

In another big senior performance, St. Joseph’s-bound point guard Geena Gomez scored a game-high 21 points and had 12 assists. Freshman forward Justine Modde also scored 16 points.

Edison improved to 8-1 in league and 17-6 overall after a rivalry game that Wiley said was “hard fought and close throughout.”

“It was a great night for our seniors to finish strong in what could be their last home game at Edison,” Wiley said.

Senior forward Jasmine Matar had a big game for Fountain Valley (10-15, 2-7 in league) with 20 points and 19 rebounds with two steals. Junior guard Danielle Kennedy hit three three-pointers and finished with 12 points. Junior forward Emily Krause had seven points and eight rebounds and senior forward Danielle Tran scored six points and played “lock-down defense,” Fountain Valley Coach Cory Clarke said.

“Our girls did exactly what I asked them to do [Monday night],” Fountain Valley Coach Cory Clarke said. “We wanted to contain the Gomez girls and make someone else beat us. Riley Lowe did. She made five out of 10, three-point field goals. Each one stopped our momentum.”

Los Alamitos kept pace with Edison by winning, 57-36, Monday against visiting Huntington Beach. Junior guard Stephanie Louie had three three-pointers and led the third-place Oilers (17-6, 6-3) with 11 points. Huntington made only 12 of 46 shot attempts and was just five of 13 from the free-throw line.

Marina’s senior night game against Newport Harbor Monday was a success, as the Vikings rolled to a 49-20 victory over the visiting Sailors. The win put the Vikings at 3-6 in league and 12-13 overall.

Senior guard Lauren Dorame had 15 points and three steals, senior center Kasey Cutchshaw scored seven points, junior forward Natasha Mangham had eight points, seven rebounds and five blocks, and junior guard Melissa Lindquist had two points, four assists and five steals for Marina.

“[Monday night] was senior night, and what better way to honor those five senior players, but to play hard and earn the win,” Marina Coach Carol Osbrink said.

In Sunset games played Jan. 31, Edison defeated Marina, 56-38, Huntington toppled Newport Harbor, 60-21, and Fountain Valley fell, 52-43, to Los Alamitos.

Geena Gomez and Dolores Gomez scored 16 and 11 points, respectively, for Edison in its win over Marina. Junior guard Madison Yutkins scored 11 points with four rebounds and two steals, Mangham had eight points and 14 rebounds, and senior center Danielle Brown scored eight points for Marina.

“I was proud of the team,” Osbrink said. “They played a better game against Edison this round.”

Junior guard Paola Roa scored a game-high 12 points and senior guard Jill Nakaso and senior post Emily Vaught both scored 11 points to pace Huntington in its win against Newport Harbor.

Matar scored nine points and Kennedy scored eight in Fountain Valley’s loss to Los Alamitos. The Barons held a 36-33 lead through three quarters, but the Griffins used a 12-2 run to turn the game around.

“Our girls played well for 24 minutes, then we couldn’t find good shots on offense nor could we stop [Los Alamitos] from scoring in the final quarter,” Clarke said.

Ocean View: The Seahawks picked up another win in Golden West League action Tuesday by downing visiting Orange, 31-21. Treasure Robinson led all scorers with 11 points.

In previous league play, Ocean View lost, 69-20, to visiting Westminster Jan. 31. Robinson led the Seahawks with eight points.

Brethren Christian: The Warriors were upended, 51-5, by host St. Margaret’s in an Academy League game Tuesday.

In league play Saturday, BC fell victim to reigning Academy League champ Whitney of Cerritos Saturday, 63-20. Annie Huie scored eight points for BC, which dropped to 0-8 in league and 2-17 overall.

“The girls played a spirited contest against the three-time league champion,” BC Coach Jeff Wallace said. “[We were] overmatched in every aspect of the game, [but] they still put forth their best efforts in for the teammates whom they were honoring on senior night.”

In a Jan. 31 league game, sisters Courtney and Grace Okwudibonye made their first appearances in the BC lineup this year and Grace Okwudibonye scored a game-high 22 points in a 53-37 loss to Crean Lutheran.

CIF Southern Section Playoffs next week

The CIF Southern Section girls’ basketball division pairings will be announced Sunday. First-round games start Feb. 14.
