Briefs: OCC’s Ransom shines

Orange Coast College sophomore Marquis Ransom earned first-team All-Orange Empire Conference honors in men’s basketball.

Ransom, a 6-foot-3 forward, averaged 13.4 points and 4.1 rebounds for the Pirates, who finished 12-15, 3-9 in conference.

In his final five games, Ransom, who played the 2011-12 season at College of the Sequoias, averaged 18.2 points. He had a season-high 27 points in a Dec. 1 victory over Rio Hondo.

UCI’s Hammel honored

UC Irvine freshman men’s tennis player Jonathan Hammel received the 2012 Evelyn Houseman Lifetime Junior Sportsmanship Award recently. The award is the highest honor given to a junior tennis player who displays exemplary conduct while participating in Southern California Tennis Assn. and United States Tennis Assn. programs.

Hammel joins his sister, Stephanie Hammel, as Anteaters who have been recognized on and off the court. She claimed the ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award as a senior last season.
