High School Roundup: CdM wins tourney

LA JOLLA — The Corona del Mar High boys’ tennis team won the La Jolla Country Day School Invitational Saturday.

In the final, CdM played its best tennis defeating Harvard-Westlake, 7-2.

CdM defeated La Jolla, 9-0, and Cathedral Catholic, 9-0, on Friday. CdM beat a strong Torrey Pines team 7-2 in the semifinals.

The format of three doubles sets and six singles showcased CdM’s depth.

Alec Adamson went undefeated in singles and doubles and teamed with Carson Williams. Chaz Downing and Josh Kliger played great doubles in the semifinal and final matches. Bjorn Hoffmann, Ryan Andrews and Pedro Fernandez all contributed wins in singles. Senior doubles specialists Andrew Nguyen and Paul Kacik were undefeated.

CdM returns to action Tuesday at home against Peninsula.

BASEBALL

Corona del Mar 10, La Habra 7

LA HABRA —- Senior Max Stone went three for four with three runs batted in and two doubles in the Sea Kings’ second pool-play game in the Foothill Division of the Newport Elks Tournament on Saturday.

Hunter Heckendorn went three for four with two RBIs for CdM (1-1), which plays its final pool-play game on Monday at home against Santa Fe Springs St. Paul at 3 p.m.

CdM’s Nick Roco drove in two runs.

Brett Olson got the win for CdM after four innings in relief.

Estancia 3, Western 0

COSTA MESA — Pitcher Steven Macias threw a complete-game shutout for the Eagles, who won their second pool-play game in the Costa Mesa Division of the Newport Elks Tournament on Saturday.

Macias allowed two hits, one walk and struck out two.

Ben Beck, Tyler Rios and Macias each recorded a single and run for the Eagles (2-0).

Estancia plays host to Cerritos Valley Christian on Monday at 3 p.m.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Beckman 8, Newport Harbor 7

IRVINE — Goalie Christian Ruelas made nine saves in the Sailors’ nonleague match on Saturday.

Nathan Chaness, Chris Buchanan, Garrett Farthing, Clay Smyth, Alex Fuller and Brian Team each recorded goals for Newport Harbor.

The Sailors play at Mater Dei on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
