College Roundup: Nehrir shines in OCC win

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Zach Nehrir went four for five with one run batted in and two runs to help the Pirates rally from a 5-1 deficit in the Orange Empire Conference home clash Tuesday.

OCC is ranked No. 2 in Southern California, and Santa Ana is No. 1.

Austin Saenz was three for four with two RBIs, while Greg Espinoza was two for two with two RBIs for the winners (14-4, 2-1 in conference).

Ricky Navarro had three hits and an RBI and Steve Pollakov added two hits to the hosts’ 18-hit attack.

Corey Davis was credited with the win after allowing one run on 1 2/3 innings, while David Wilson posted his first save by working 3 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.

Santa Ana fell to 12-3, 1-2.

OCC visits Fullerton on Thursday at 2 p.m.

MEN’S GOLF

Fresno State tournament

FRESNO — UC Irvine junior Allan Jun shot eight-under-par 208 to finish fourth at the 54-hole event concluded Tuesday at Belmont Country Club.

UCI finished seventh among 17 teams, with a score of 1,087, 50 shots behind victorious UC Berkeley.

Jun was eight shots back of medalist Michael Kim of Cal.

UCI’s Travis Russell was 29th at 218, while senior Michael Yang was 35th at 219 and sophomore Pete Fernandez was 44th at 220.

UCI plays hosts the 33rd Anteater Invitational March 25-26 at El Niguel Country Club in Laguna Niguel.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Juli Inkster Invitational

SAN JOSE — UC Irvine freshman Luciane Lee finsihed tied for third, her best collegiate showing to lead the Anteaters in the 54-hold event concluded Tuesday at the Almaden Golf and Country Club.

Leeshot 220, including an opening-round 71, to help UCI finish sixth as a team. The 71 tied Lee’s season best.

Senior Michelle Park (tied for 20th at 227), Ronnie Valerio (30th at 230), junior Sara Banke (tied for 41st at (234) and Taryn Yee (tied for 49th at 237) also fared well for the Anteaters.
