Boxing: Salgado wants to leave no doubt this time

Juan Carlos Salgado heard the tight scores when he last fought Argenis Mendez for the IBF super featherweight championship.

Salgado, the champ, also heard the complaints come from Mendez’s corner after winning the vacant 130-pound title by scores of 115-110, 114-112, 114-112.

This time, Salgado of Mexico City wants to leave no doubt when he fights against Mendez in a rematch Saturday in The Hangar at the OC Fair in Costa Mesa.

The bout is the main event of fights that begin at 4:30 p.m.

Salgado-Mendez is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be televised by HBO Latino. As of Friday afternoon “plenty of tickets” for the event remained available, promoter Dan Goosen said, and can be purchased by calling (818) 817-8001.

The Salgado-Mendez bout moved up as the main attraction when the big heavyweight fight between Chris Arreola and Bermane Stiverne was postponed. That match has been rescheduled because Arreola came down with a bronchial infection.

HBO was scheduled to televise that bout.

Goosen believes Saturday night will still be “a good show,” led by Salgado-Mendez.

The two originally battled for the vacant super featherweight title in September 2011. Salgado (26-1-1, 16 KOs) told ESPNDeportesLosAngeles.com that he was coming off an injury and wasn’t totally prepared to fight the Dominican boxer.

But Salgado took the fight because he didn’t want the opportunity of a vacant title to pass him by, he said.

Salgado grew tired late in the bout. In the 12th round, he said he became tired and fell a few times because of exhaustion. Mendez (20-2, 10 KOs) believes his punches were the reason.

Nevertheless, Salgado came out on top.

“This time I am setting out to win convincingly, to achieve victory – but in a convincing fashion,” Salgado told the ESPN website.

The Molina twins, Javier and Oscar, are scheduled to fight in respective bouts also on Saturday in Costa Mesa.

Javier Molina (12-1, 5 KOs), the 2008 U.S. Olympian nicknamed “El Intocable” (the untouchable), will face Joseph Elegele (13-1, 10 KOs) in an eight-round welterweight bout.

Oscar Molina (1-0), a 2012 Olympian for Mexico, will make his U.S. debut in a four-round welterweight fight against Jalani Wilson of Los Angeles (0-2-1).

Other featured fights include Cornelius “Da Beast” White (20-1, 16 KOs) versus Otis Griffin (24-11-2, 10 KOs) in a 10-round light heavyweight fight and the pro debut of featherweight Juan Funez of Van Nuys, who fights against Jose Garcia (1-5-1, 1 KO) of King City.
