High School Roundup: CdM edges Mullen

CORONA DEL MAR — Corona del Mar High senior Jack Ortlieb scored the game-winning goal after Mullen (Colorado) rallied from two goals down, as the Sea Kings won, 9-8, Wednesday.

Ortlieb finished with three goals and one assist. Mullen is the top-ranked team in Colorado by laxpower.com, while CdM (9-0) is ranked No. 5 in California and has won 33 straight games.

The Sea Kings received strong defensive play from sophomores Brett Greenlee, Chad Redfearn (five groundballs) and Hugh Crance. Sophomore goalie Hoyt Crance made 10 saves.

Casey Mix (one assist) and Sherwin Gersten scored two goals each.

CdM plays host to Los Alamitos Saturday at noon.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 17, Dana Hills 1

DANA POINT— Sophomore Ryan Andrews and junior Samee Aboubakare swept at No. 2 doubles for CdM in Wednesday’s nonleague match.

Alec Adamson ad Bjorn Hoffmann both swept in singles for the Sea Kings, and the No. 1 doubles team of Carson Williams and Pedro Fernandez also swept.

CdM (11-1), ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section 1, plays host to No. 6 Santa Barbara on Saturday.

BASEBALL

Laguna Hills 4, Corona del Mar 1

CORONA DEL MAR — Brett Olson was one for three with a run batted in for CdM in the Beach Pit Classic game Wednesday.

Hunter Heckendorn, Tyler Duncan, Baron Schwarz and Nolan McCarthy added hits for the Sea Kings (5-9), who play host to Greeley of Colorado on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 4, Estancia 3 (eight innings)

COSTA MESA — Tyler Rios, who pitched a complete game with four strikeouts for the Eagles, went two for four in the Beach Pit Classic game Wednesday.

Rios allowed nine hits and two earned runs. Estancia (10-5) went 3-1 in the round-robin Beach Pit Classic.

Ben Beck went two for four with two runs and three stolen bases and Jackson Letterman went two for three with one run and two stolen bases.

Estancia plays at Laguna Beach Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

Century 5, Costa Mesa 0

SANTA ANA — Freshman pitcher Mason Tufuga gave up one earned run over six innings for Mesa in the Century Classic tournament game Wednesday.

Tufuga, James Barton, Justin Fisher, Kage Kistler and Alex Jimenez all had hits for the Mustangs.
