College Roundup: Vanguard sweeps doubleheader

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Vanguard swept Mount St. Vincent, winning the nonconference doubleheader, 18-0, and 12-4, Thursday.

Freshman Madison Wolfe struck out nine and allowed one hit in five innings of shutout ball during the Lions’ first game.

Wolfe improved to 2-0 after the opening game was called after five innings.

Vanguard’s Haley Croce tripled twice, drove in three runs and walked twice. Brittney Boggs went two for four with a run batted in and a double.

The second game lasted six innings. Vanguard improved to 27-16.

Shelby Kuryllo hit a three-run home run and finished two for four with four RBIs for the Lions.

In the sixth inning, Vanguard’s Lindsay Sullivan led off with an inside-the-park home run and Gabrielle Jackson followed with a solo homer to left-center field.

Irvine Valley 6, Orange Coast 3

COSTA MESA — Francesco Nguyen won at No. 6 singles, 7-6 4-6 12-10 for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference match Thursday.

Andrew Pham and Dillon Nguyen won at No. 2 doubles, 8-2, and Anthony Thai and Francesco Nguyen won at No. 3 doubles, 8-6, for OCC.
