High School Roundup: CdM wins again

CORONA DEL MAR — The Corona del Mar High boys’ lacrosse team just keeps on winning.

This time the Sea Kings came from behind to beat Huntington Beach.

CdM overcame a 3-0 deficit to earn their 35th straight win and improve to 11-0 Wednesday.

Senior Jack Ortlieb had six goals and one assist to lead the way for CdM. Seniors Casey Mix (one goal, two assists), Chris Von Der Ahe (two goals) and Todd Kitzens (five groundballs) as well as sophomores Max Kline (one goal), Hoyt Crance (four saves.), Chad Redfearn (four groundballs) and Brett Greenlee (three groundballs) also contributed for the Sea Kings.

CdM next plays host to Thousand Oaks on Saturday.

IRVINE — Molly Rovzar scored four goals and Kacie Kline added three for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Wednesday.

Payton Carter had one goal, one assist and three draw controls, Emily Turner contributed three goals and two assists and goalie April Tran (five saves) and Kate Allen (six saves) also stood out for CdM (12-3, 6-1 in league).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Corona del Mar def. Northwood

CORONA DEL MAR — Joey Martino had 14 kills, leading a balanced Sea Kings effort in the 25-16, 25-20, 25-19 sweep Wednesday at CdM.

Ryan Moss added 11 kills and nine digs for CdM (12-7, 6-0 in league). Ryan Clayton added eight kills and three blocks.

Tommy Brooks had seven kills, while Erik Ctvrtlik had a team-high 15 digs and Matt Ctvrtlik dished out 42 assists.

Second-place Northwood fell to 4-2 in league.

CdM, tied for 10th in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, plays at University on Friday.

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Michael Phan shot six-over-par 43 to earn medalist honors for the Lightning in the Academy League match Wednesday at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Los Lagos course.

Sage Hill is 3-9, 2-3 in league.

NEWPORT BEACH — Karick Brown and Chase Wheatley both shot even-par 35 for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match at Newport Beach Country Club Wednesday.

John Hong (39), Drew Hanson (40) and Ian Fletcher (40) also scored for CdM (9-6, 3-3 in league)

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Costa Mesa 97, Saddleback 59

SANTA ANA — Senior Kellie Thorsness was a double winner for the Mustangs in the Orange Coast League meet Wednesday on the road.

Thorsness won the 100-yard freestyle in 57.09 seconds and the 50 free in 25.44. Lauren Smith won the 200 free in 2:08.44 and finished second in the 100 free (58.42).

Aubry Hill won the 100 butterfly (1:13.26) and Devon Christiansen won the 500 free (6:29.60) for Costa Mesa, which swims again April 17 against Calvary Chapel.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Los Alamitos 9, Newport Harbor 8

NEWPORT BEACH — Clay Smyth scored three goals for the Sailors (3-11, 1-3 in league) in their league loss Wednesday.

Riley Peterson scored twice, provided an assist, and led the team with seven faceoff wins and seven groundballs. Garrett Farthing scored twice and had two takeaways. Chris Buchanan also scored, while assists were provided by Brian Team (two assists, five groundballs), Alex Fuller (four groundballs), and Brandon Rausch (four groundballs).

Defensive contributions were made by Nathan Frank (five groundballs, two takeaways, one knockdown), Blake Lenk (three groundballs, two takeaways), Andrew Craft (two takeaways, one groundball) and Tyler Palmquist (two groundballs, two knockdowns). Christian Ruelas made 10 saves.

The Sailors next play in two weeks at home on senior night on April 27 at 7 p.m. against Esperanza.
