High School Roundup: Tars break streak

NEWPORT BEACH — The Newport Harbor High softball team broke the program’s 52-game losing streak in the Sunset League dating to 2007 with a 6-5 victory over Fountain Valley Thursday.

Hattie Marshall, who pitched a complete game, went two for three and had three runs batted in.

Lauren Gandi went two for four with an RBI. Breanna Lopez, who did not have a hit, reached base three times.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Corona del Mar 113, Irvine 13

IRVINE — The Sea Kings dominated the Pacific Coast League meet with a first-place finish in every event Thursday at Irvine High.

Nick Willard was a double winner with victories in the 100 meters (10.9 seconds) and 200 (23.3).

Willard was also on the victorious 4x100 relay with Barrett Barbato, Lance Seger and Matt Hurst that finished in 43.6.

Matt Hurst (51.8 in 400), Tanner Love (2:06.8 in 800), Teddy Parks (4:26.7 in 1,600), Spencer Keith (10:06.7 in 3,200), Nick McGuinness (16.3 in 110 hurdles), Troy Hardy (40.5 in 300 hurdles), Troy Bolus (19-5 in long jump), Darian Vaden (38-1 in triple jump), Alex Wilde (5-0 in high jump), Michael Pierotti (42-9 3/4) in shot put and Nick Storm (148-7 in discus) also won for CdM.

Hardy, Love, McGuinness and Hurst finished first in the 4x400 relay in 3:36.0.

Los Alamitos 87, Newport Harbor 44

NEWPORT BEACH — Marcell DeBarros won the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.6 seconds in the Sailors’ Sunset League dual meet at home on Thursday.

Newport Harbor dropped to 1-3 in league.

Riley Gaddis finished first in both the long jump (18 feet 10 inches) and triple jump (38-11).

Marty Taylor won the shotput (59-10) and discus throw (178-2).

Christian Abbey was first in the pole vault (14-2).

Newport Harbor travels to Fountain Valley Wednesday for a league dual meet at 2:45 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Los Alamitos 10, Newport Harbor 8

LOS ALAMITOS — Sophomore Reese Stalder won two of three sets in No. 1 singles play for the Sailors, but it wasn’t enough for Newport Harbor to catch first-place Los Alamitos in Sunset League play on Thursday.

Newport Harbor went into the day trailing first-place Los Alamitos. The Sailors dropped to 4-2 in league and the Griffins improved to 6-0.

David Schaefer and Phillip Vu, playing No. 2 doubles, claimed two of three sets for the Sailors.

Newport Harbor plays host to Fountain Valley on Friday at 3 p.m.

Estancia 12, Godinez 6

COSTA MESA — The Eagles dominated in doubles with its No. 2 team sweeping at love in the Orange Coast League match Thursday.

Estancia is 14-5, 6-1 in league.

Whitney 12, Sage Hill 6

NEWPORT BEACH — Sage Hill’s No. 1 doubles team of Eric Magliarditi and Kenan Torlic swept in the Academy League match Thursday at The Tennis Club.

The No. 2 doubles team of Ryan Lee and Sam Sherman also swept for the Lightning (0-12, 0-5 in league).

Whitney, ranked No. 9 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, improved to 10-1, 4-1.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Calvary Chapel def. Estancia

SANTA ANA — Sophomore outside hitter Dalton O’Daly had four kills for the Eagles in an Orange Coast League match that Calvary Chapel swept, 25-17, 25-22, 25-18, on Thursday.

Estancia, which dropped to 0-4 in league play, is at rival Costa Mesa on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Corona del Mar 86, Irvine 41

IRVINE — Lilly Schmidt was one of eight winners for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet Thursday at Irvine High.

Schmidt finished the 800 meters in 2:28.1.

Jacqueline Choe (5:26.1 in 1,600), Shelby Perez (12:17.7 in 3,200), Emma Kratzberg (16.3 in 100 hurdles), Emily Glenn (47.7 in 300 hurdles), Claire Keddington (32-6 in triple jump), Asha Hardy (5-1 in high jump) and Hannah Bagdasar (94-9 in discus) also won for CdM.

Los Alamitos 94, Newport Harbor 42

NEWPORT HARBOR — Peri Howser won the pole vault with a mark of 11 feet 3 inches and Ellis Hagadorn won the high jump at 4-10 during the Sailors’ Sunset League dual meet at home on Thursday.

Erin Barth placed second in both the 800-meter (2:25 seconds) and 1,600-meter events (5:28.1) for Newport Harbor (1-3 in league).

Rachelle A La Torre was second in the shotput (32-7) and third in the discus (89-9), both efforts are personal bests.

The Sailors are at Fountain Valley on Wednesday at 2:45 p.m.

Corona del Mar 194, University 205

NEWPORT BEACH — Chase Wheatley shot two-over-par 37 to earn medalist honors for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match Thursday.

Brian Hong, Karick Brown and Drew Hanson shot 39, while Ian Fletcher carded a 40 for CdM (10-6, 4-3 in league).

COSTA MESA — Chae Kim shot six-over-par 41, his best round of the year, for the Mustangs in the Orange Coast League match at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course Thursday.

Costa Mesa is 2-13, 0-7 in league.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Godinez 124, Estancia 38

SANTA ANA — Raymond Hernandez and Aaron Will recorded personal-best times in their events Wednesday in Orange Coast League action at Santa Ana Valley High.

Hernandez went 7 minutes, 4.08 seconds in the 500-yard freestyle, dropping 25 seconds from his previous 500 swim.

Will finished the 100 free in 1:05.45.

Estancia (0-9, 0-4 in league) next competes at Savanna April 23.
