SAN MARCOS — The Pirates fell in the opener of a best-of-three regional in the California Community College Athletic Assn. Southern California playoffs Friday.

Greg Espinosa went two for three for OCC (22-15), who play Saturday at 10 a.m. If the Pirates win the third game will take place later in the day.

Anthony Virgen and Chadd Tucker each drove in a run for OCC.

Palomar is 25-11.

UC Irvine 14, UC Santa Barbara 9

SANTA BARBARA — Chris Rabago produced two hits and four runs bated in for the No. 19-ranked Anteaters to open the Big West Conference series Friday.

Jeff Stephens also had two hits and three RBIs, while Taylor Sparks was four for five with two RBIs. Jerry McClanahan drove in two runs for UCI (29-13, 11-5 in conference).

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Big West Heptathlon

NORTHRIDGE — UC Irvine freshman Melanie Speech scored over 2,600 points on the first day at the Big West Conference Multi-Event Championships Friday.

Speech, competing in her first heptathlon, scored 2,664 points in four events and sits in 10th place at the Northridge Track & Field Complex.

The graduate of Lowell High School in San Francisco had the top effort of the 15 competitors in the shotput with a mark of 41-0 ¼. Her other times/marks Friday were 16.41 in the 100-meter hurdles, 4-6 ¼ in the high jump and 25.81 in the 200 meters.

Samantha Balentine of Hawai’i leads with 3,235 points.

Action concludes Saturday with three events – the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meters.
