Boys’ Tennis: CdM, Estancia, Newport Harbor vie in playoffs

The Corona del Mar High boys’ tennis team has earned the No. 2 seed for the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs, for which brackets were released Monday.

Estancia and Newport Harbor were the other local teams to earn spots in the postseason.

The Sea Kings, who finished second in the Pacific Coast League to top-seeded and three-time defending CIF champion University, will play host to Brentwood in the Division 1 first round at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Brentwood is the second-place team out of the Alpha League.

CdM (18-2) is led by UC Davis-bound senior Alec Adamson, who advanced to the final at the Pacific Coast League tournament, as well as the top doubles team of juniors Carson Williams and Josh Kliger.

The Sea Kings are trying to get back to the Division 1 title match for the second straight year.

Also in Division 1, the Sailors, who finished third in the Sunset League, play host to Beckman in a wild-card match at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Sophomore Reese Stalder leads Newport Harbor (12-9) at No. 1 singles.

Estancia (15-5) was the co-champion of the Orange Coast League with Laguna Beach, earning a share of the title for the first time since 2007. The Eagles will play host to the winner of a wild-card match between Cerritos Gahr and Temecula Linfield Christian in the first round of the Division 4 playoffs at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The Eagles are led by the doubles teams of Matt Thomas and Robert Marrone, as well as Erik Cerros and Sterling Gates. The two Estancia teams faced off in the Orange Coast League tournament final, with Thomas and Marrone winning.
