Huntington Beach High and Edison are moving on in the CIF Southern Section boys’ volleyball playoffs.

Both the Oilers and Chargers started postseason play Tuesday, and both swept their opponents in first-round Division 1 matches. The Oilers, the No. 3-seed in Division 1, improved to 27-2 overall. They advanced to play a second-round match at 7 p.m. Thursday at Orange Lutheran (Trinity League No. 3).

“I thought we came out focused and ready to play in Game 1,” Huntington Coach Craig Pazanti said. “I think it was important for us to start strong, not just for this match, but to help us set a tone for the playoffs.

“Last season, we dropped the first game in our first CIF match, and I felt like we never really hit our stride. So we definitely stressed a fast start. Hopefully we can use this win to build some momentum and make a deep run in this years playoffs.”

By sweeping Aliso Niguel, Edison (12-14, Sunset No. 3) moves on to face No. 2-seed and Mission League winner Los Angeles Loyola. The Chargers play host to the Cubs at 7 p.m. Thursday.

“We got production from all our hitters,” Edison Coach Trent Jackson said of Tuesday’s win. “The passing and serving was pretty good. Our setter [Chandler Gibb] did a nice job spreading out the offense.”

Fountain Valley reached the Division 1 playoffs as an at-large team from the Sunset League. The Barons played a wild-card match Monday at El Toro (South Coast League at-large). The host Chargers defeated the Barons, 25-13, 25-14, 25-15, 25-17.
