High School Roundup: Taylor shines in Division 2 prelims

CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries

MOORPARK — Newport Harbor senior Marty Taylor qualified first in the discus throw with a personal-best heave of 190 feet, 4 1/2 inches and he qualified first in the shotput in 60-9 1/2 at Moorpark High on Saturday.

Taylor is one of three Sailors advancing to the CIF Southern Section Division 2 finals next week at Mt. San Antonio College.

Will Fortier and Ramsey Hufford qualified in the shotput with marks of 53-4 (seventh) and 52-9 1/4 (ninth), respectively. The top nine in the field events moved on to the finals.

Freshman Joe Stukonis was 10th in the discus (190-4 1/2).

Senior Christian Abbey and sophomore David Munoz were one of seven to clear 13-6 in the pole vault, but Manhattan Beach Mira Costa senior Reed Scale won the jump-off to grab the ninth and final qualifying spot.

CIF Southern Section Division 4 preliminaries

CARPINTERIA — Sage Hill School sophomore C.J. McCord qualified first in the high jump Saturday at Carpinteria High to advance to next week’s CIF Southern Section finals at Mt. San Antonio College.

McCord cleared 6 feet with no misses.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries

MOORPARK — Newport Harbor senior Peri Howser pole vaulted 10 feet, 6 inches at Moorpark High on Saturday, qualifying her for the CIF Southern Section Division 2 finals at Mt. San Antonio College next week.

Howser was one of eight who cleared 10-6. The top nine qualified for the finals.
