Mikulak captures national title

Sam Mikulak, a Corona del Mar High product and a two-time NCAA men's gymnastics champion at the University of Michigan, won the men's all-around title at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships that were completed Sunday in Hartford, Conn.

Mikulak, 20, a member of the American team at the 2012 Olympics in London who will be a senior at Michigan in the fall, topped runner-up Alex Naddour by nearly three points, posting a two-day all-around total of 181.40.

Mikulak, who led by a huge margin of 2.95 points over then runner-up Jake Dalton after the first day, also won national titles on the parallel bars (30.90) and the horizontal bar (31.35).

On the opening day of competition on Saturday, Mikulak, who grew up in Newport Coast, tied for the best score on the horizontal bar (15.60), and had the second-best scores on the pommel horse (15.20) and the parallel bars (15.35).

He bettered his opening-round scores on the parallel bars, the horizontal bar, and the floor exercise in Sunday's final round.

Mikulak was on the U.S. team that placed fifth in London and was fifth individually in the vault.

Dalton wound up third.
