HB Mariners win title

The HB Mariners took the 8-and-Under division tournament championship Sunday at the Xtreme Diamond Sports Rings Classic at the Huntington Beach Sports Complex.

HB Mariners won three games in the five-team division. It won big, 17-0, against Next Level Baseball to open the tournament Saturday, but later in the day suffered its only tournament loss, a 7-4 setback to the Bakersfield Bullets.

The Mariners came back Sunday to score its second tourney shutout, a 13-0 win against the Delano Bulldogs, and played advanced to meet up again with the Bakersfield Bullets in the division final. In the title game, HB Mariners scored three runs in the first inning and then held off the Bullets for a 5-3 victory.

The Mariners also scored single runs in the third and fifth innings. Dylan Scales drove in a run in the third on a fielder’s choice.

John Michael “JM” Harduvel went two for two at the plate with singles in both the first and fifth innings. Harduvel also got the pitching win. He allowed five hits and three runs, struck out three and walked three over three innings. Closer Matt Fox registered the final nine outs of the game to earn the save.

Softball

The Huntington Beach Elite, a Under-12 Gold All-Star team from Huntington Beach Girls Softball, was presented commendations at Monday’s Huntington Beach City Council meeting. THE finished tied for ninth-place Aug. 3 at the 2013 Amateur Softball Assn. B Western National Championship tournament.

During the 2013 All-Star season, THE played in eight tournaments that started in late-May and ended with the Western Regional. The team had an overall record of 29-9-1 in tournament play.

THE team members were presented commendations by Mayor Connie Boardman. THE Manager, Mark Fullbright, presented each city council member with commemorative HBGS trading pins.

Youth Football

Huntington Beach Pop Warner Football, which held opening day ceremonies Saturday, will hold scrimmages this Saturday. Huntington Beach teams officially open their playing schedules Aug. 31.

Huntington Beach Jr. All-American Football will start its 2013 season Sept. 7.
