Briefs: Women’s national water polo team wins gold

The USA Water Polo women’s junior national team won the gold medal at the 2013 FINA Women’s Junior World Championships Sunday by defeating Spain, 9-7, in the championship game at Volos, Greece.

Former Edison All-CIF player Alys Williams (Class of 2012), now at UCLA and a defender for the Bruins, is on the Team USA roster.

Williams scored three goals during the tournament, posting single goals in wins against Greece (10-3) Saturday, New Zealand (12-5) Aug. 21, and against Italy (8-5) Aug. 20.

Team USA went 5-0 at the tournament, which started Aug. 19.

Greece topped Russia, 7-6, Sunday to win the bronze medal.

The U.S. men’s junior national team, which includes Bret Bonanni (Mater Dei High, Stanford) of Huntington Beach, took fifth place at the FINA Men’s Junior World Championships Aug. 18 at Szombathley, Hungary. Bonanni, an attacker, scored two goals as Team USA beat Spain, 9-7, in the fifth-place game.

Bonanni scored 19 goals in six tournament games. He led Team USA in scoring against Russia (11-9 win) with three goals, six against Japan (19-6 win) and three against Spain (8-6 loss). Bonanni also tied for team-high scoring honors with four goals in a 13-11 win against Australia Aug. 17.

AVP Tour coming to Surf City

The seventh and final stop of the 2013 Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Pro Beach Volleyball Tour will be in Huntington Beach Oct. 19-20.

The tournament will be played at the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

The tour started Aug. 16 at Salt Lake City, Utah, and last weekend held its second event, the 53rd annual Manhattan Beach Open.

The women’s title was won by Kerri Walsh Jennings (Manhattan Beach) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Hills).

Casey Jennings (Manhattan Beach) and Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa) won the men’s title.

The next AVP Tour stop is Saturday and Sunday at Cincinnati, Ohio.
