Beach volleyball legend Misty May-Treanor, a three-time Olympic gold medalist and a former Newport Harbor High standout, has been named a volunteer assistant coach for the USC women’s sand volleyball team, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.

Coach Anna Collier said Tuesday that adding May-Treanor to the staff will elevate the team and make the Trojans a national title contender, the AP report said.

The USC team features newcomer Sarah Hughes, a Costa Mesa resident, as well as Newport Harbor alumni Kirby Burnham and Cinnamon Sary.

May-Treanor retired after last year’s Olympics in London, where she teamed with Kerri Walsh Jennings and the pair became the first duo to win Olympic gold three times in the sport.

May-Treanor starred at Long Beach State, where she led the 49ers to an undefeated season and NCAA title in 1998. She was a three-time American Volleyball Coaches Assn. player of the year.
