The Laguna Beach High girls’ volleyball team made Raul Papaleo’s debut as head coach a successful one Tuesday by earning a season-opening road victory over JSerra.

The Breakers came back from a one-set deficit to score a 17-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-20 over the host Lions.

Laguna entered the season ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 1A.

JSerra was unranked.

“We started out flat,” Papaleo said. “We had 14 unforced errors early and that told me we weren’t mentally prepared. We regrouped and we were able to get our mental focus back. I think we improved as the match went on, and really started passing well.

The Breakers’ doubles teams competed Tuesday at a doubles tournament at Corona del Mar High. The Breakers, host Sea Kings, San Clemente, and Palos Verdes, took part in the event.

Laguna Coach Don Davis said no scores were kept.

“It was a good way to start the season,” Davis said. “We mixed things around, tried different player combinations. Doubles are always a mystery at the start of the season.

“The girls on our teams are always nervous for that first match, and the tournament was a good way to get those nerves out of the way.

The Breakers played a Thursday nonleague match at Mission Viejo. Match results weren’t available at press time.

Next week, Laguna plays its home opener Tuesday against Northwood at 3 p.m. The Breakers also are home for a 3 p.m. match Thursday against Mater Dei.
