High School Roundup: Breakers girls' volleyball opens with win

The Laguna Beach High girls' volleyball team made Raul Papaleo's debut as head coach a successful one Tuesday by earning a season-opening road victory over JSerra.

The Breakers came back from a one-set deficit to score a 17-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-20 over the host Lions.

Laguna entered the season ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 1A.

JSerra was unranked.

"We started out flat," Papaleo said. "We had 14 unforced errors early and that told me we weren't mentally prepared. We regrouped and we were able to get our mental focus back. I think we improved as the match went on, and really started passing well.

"It was nice to get the first match out of the way and be able to come out with a big victory."

For the Breakers, junior outside hitter Alyse Wallace-Ford had 23 kills and 11 digs, junior outside hitter/opposite Sabrina Stillwell had 11 kills and 11 digs, junior libero Francie Holte 28 digs, sophomore setter Aspen Rocha five kills and 21 set assists, sophomore opposite/middle blocker Cameron Dorn six kills, and sophomore setter Taylor Cunningham had 17 set assists.

Laguna opened its home season Thursday against Santa Margarita. The scores from the match weren't available at press time.

The Breakers play a 5:45 p.m. nonleague match Tuesday at Newport Harbor. They'll start play at the three-day Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament Sept. 13.

Girls' Tennis

The Breakers' doubles teams competed Tuesday at a doubles tournament at Corona del Mar High. The Breakers, host Sea Kings, San Clemente, and Palos Verdes, took part in the event.

Laguna Coach Don Davis said no scores were kept.

"It was a good way to start the season," Davis said. "We mixed things around, tried different player combinations. Doubles are always a mystery at the start of the season.

"The girls on our teams are always nervous for that first match, and the tournament was a good way to get those nerves out of the way.

The Breakers played a Thursday nonleague match at Mission Viejo. Match results weren't available at press time.

Next week, Laguna plays its home opener Tuesday against Northwood at 3 p.m. The Breakers also are home for a 3 p.m. match Thursday against Mater Dei.

The Laguna boys' and girls' cross-country teams open their 2013 meet schedule Friday at the 24th annual Seaside Invitational in Ventura.
