College Roundup: UCI men’s soccer stuns Louisville, 1-0

UC Irvine 1, Louisville 0

LOUISVILLE, Ky — Junior forward Trey Hayes scored an unassisted goal in the 69th minute to lead the visiting Anteaters to an upset of the No. 16-ranked Cardinals on Friday.

Hayes had a team-best four shots as UCI posted a 14-4 advantage in that department.

Michael Breslin made one save to preserve the shutout for UCI (3-1-1).

Louisville is 2-2.

UCI visits Indiana on Sunday.

William Carey 1, Vanguard 0

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — The Lions surrendered the only goal in the 87th minute of the nonconference match on Friday.

William Carey of Mississippi had only seven shots, half as many as the Lions.

But Charlie Laridan made three saves to preserve the shutout.

Juan Arellano had four shots for the Lions (1-2 ).

William Carey is 3-1-1.

Vanguard faces top-ranked Mobile on Saturday.

San Bernardino 5, Orange Coast 2

SAN BERNARDINO — Tyler Rios opened the scoring in the 12th minute for the Pirates, but the hosts scored five straight in the nonconference game on Friday.

Pedro Erhechury had the other goal for OCC (1-1-1), which had assists from Jorge Sanchez and Jacob Rushing.

San Bernardino (5-0-1) had 22 shots, eight more than the Pirates, for whom Sanchez had a team-best four shots.

Vanguard 3, William Carey 2

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Jennifer Martin scored twice and Sarah Warner notched the game-winner in the 86th minute for the No. 2-ranked Lions in the nonconference match on Friday.

Kayla Arenas, Jordan Davidson and Ashley McCutcheon all had assists for the Lions (4-0).

William Carey is ranked No. 17.

The Lions face No. 8-ranked Mobile on Saturday at the same venue.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Vanguard def. La Sierra

COSTA MESA — Junior Jessica Neves had 15 kills, nine assists, three block assists and two aces to lead the host Lions to a 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 sweep on the opening day of the Lions’ tournament on Friday.

Neves hit .444 to help Vanguard hit .293 as a team, 171 points better than La Sierra.

Kelly Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, had 12 digs for the winners (10-2).

La Sierra is 6-3.

Orange Coast def. San Bernardino Valley

COSTA MESA — Hayley Martin had nine kills as 10 different Pirates recorded at least one kill in a 25-13, 25-8, 25-7 nonconference trouncing at OCC on Friday.

Setters Megan Ritchie and Nadja V’Soske combined for 30 assists, while Kiana Nicio had 12 digs to pace the winners (3-0).

San Bernardino Valley is 0-6.

Utah def. UC Irvine

OREM, Utah — The Utes posted a 25-22, 25-19, 12-25, 25-13 victory in both team’s first contest in the three-match Wolverine Classic that concludes Saturday at Utah Valley.

It was the third straight loss for UCI (5-3), which for the first time all season did not win the team blocking battle.

Aly Squires had 16 kills and Marisa Bubica added 15, while Squires had a team-best 10 digs for the ‘Eaters.

Shelley Anderson had 38 assists and two aces for UCI.

Utah is 8-0.
