High School Roundup: CdM freshman girls XC win at Laguna invite

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Laguna Hills Invitational

LAGUNA HILLS — Corona del Mar High freshman Raquel Powers won the freshman Division III race as the Sea Kings earned team titles in the freshman, sophomore and junior races on Saturday at Laguna Hills High.

Powers completed the three-mile course in 19 minutes, 20 seconds.

Sophomore Jackie Choi (19:34), junior Elin Wolker (19:34), sophomore Lilly Schmidt (19:52), sophomore Hannah Crane (19:55), freshman Madi Greenberg (20:05) and junior Kirsten Hansen (20:12) also stood out for CdM.

Laguna Hills Invitational

LAGUNA HILLS — Newport Harbor High finished second in the Division 2 sophomore division Saturday.

Sophomores Grace Clemence finished sixth in 20 minutes, 2 seconds, Holly Clemence was seventh in 20:09 and Lauren Loucks was ninth in 20:13 to hel the Sailors finish behind Ayala.

Newport Harbor’s Erin Barth took seventh (19:40) among juniors in Division 2.

The Sailors’ Ashley Ima (16th in 20:34) and Katelyn Mead (20th in 20:53) finished in the top 20 among seniors in Division 2.

LAGUNA HILLS — Emily Olvera was eighth among freshmen in 20 minutes, 59 seconds in her division to lead Costa Mesa High Saturday.

Holly Reiland was 10th among freshmen in 21:02 and Daysi Vasquez was 16th among seniors in 20:31 for the Mustangs.

BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY

LAGUNA HILLS — Corona del Mar High senior Spencer Keith and sophomore Matt Paragas each won their respective Division III races (by grade) and the Sea Kings finished second in the sophomore division on Saturday at Laguna Hills High.

Keith, running in what Coach Bill Sumner estimated as 90-degree heat, completed the three-mile course in 15 minutes, 57 seconds.

Paragas’ time was 16:31, while CdM freshman Leif Hellgren tied for first in his race with a time of 17:11.

Senior Ethan Hold (17:22), sophomore Thomas Robertson (17:28), junior Luke McReynolds (17:40) and senior Alex Wilde (18:07) also posted top times for the Sea Kings, who were fourth in the freshman division.

LAGUNA HILLS — Anuare Magana led Costa Mesa High by finishing third in the junior race for his division in 16 minutes, 16 seconds Saturday.

Brett Bermudez was fourth among seniors in 16:17 for the Mustangs.

Joseph Pena was 11th among sophomores in 18:37 and Francisco Ruiz was 18th among sophomores in 19:09.

LAGUNA HILLS — Connor DiPaolo led the way for Newport Harbor High by finishing 10th in the Division 2 junior race in 16 minutes, 45 seconds Saturday.

Marcell DeBarros (31st in senior race in 17:27), Brian Shaw (32nd in sophomore race in 17:55), John Candias (33rd in sophomore race in 17:56), Christian Garcia (67th in junior race in 18:18) and Sean Arnold (49th in sophomore race in 18:29) and Nathan Matthews (33rd in freshman race in 18:32) also competed for the Sailors.

Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament

NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Harbor High suffered two losses to close out tourney play Saturday.

Lakewood beat the Sailors (1-5) to end pool play, 25-18, 25-13.

Logan Grove had nine assists, Carolyn Bockrath had five kills and Remy Wilson had four kills.

Laguna Beach took out Newport Harbor in bracket play, 25-18, 25-13.

Wilson had seven kills, Leah Castillo had four kills and Kaitlynn Bell had nine digs.
