Edison in control at Beckman

Execution played a key role Tuesday for the Edison High boys’ water polo team which picked up a big victory at Beckman.

The Chargers cruised to a big halftime lead and took a seven-goal advantage into the fourth quarter where Coach Diggy Riley inserted his second unit. They maintained their lead and came away with a 12-10 win.

Edison, which improved to 2-0, took a 7-2 lead at the half and were up, 10-3, heading into the fourth quarter.

Justin Harrison led all scorers with six goals. Alec Niederland and Dane Estrella both scored twice, Troy Oates scored once and assisted five goals, Jake Moss scored once, and goalie Nick Halloran had eight saves.

“Our game plan was to press them hard from the onset and to eliminate as much as possible their centers, who are very strong,” Riley said. “We executed it perfectly and were able to establish a nice counter-attack game that helped our offense open up a nice lead.

“This was only our second game of the season, so we are still showing signs of being rusty at both ends of the pool, but that comes with the territory.”

Edison next week will compete at the South Coast Tournament which starts Sept. 26.

In other boys’ water polo action:

Huntington Beach posted its sixth win of the season Saturday as the Oilers ventured down to San Diego County and scored a 7-6 victory over host Coronado.

Huntington, which improved to 6-1 and is ranked No. 7 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, held a 4-2 halftime lead. Coronado fought back to a 5-5 tie score through three quarters, took a one-goal lead in the fourth quarter, and the score was tied one final time at 6-6 late in the game.

With 22 seconds left, the Oilers drew a penalty and Jack Shearer scored the go-ahead and winning goal.

Senior Matt Cook drew four exclusions and a penalty, freshman Quinten Osborne drew three exclusions and scored one goal, and goalie Alex Wolf had 18 saves, an assist and two steals.

“This game was fun for the team,” Huntington Coach Brian Anderson said. “We have been talking a lot about selflessness and unity within the team. I think the guys embodied those concepts with their pregame ritual and their in-game performance.

“While we were sloppy at times, our boys showed great character in not folding after we went down by one in the fourth. All I said was, ‘Forget it, next play,’ and they responded. But, we need to forget this game and stay hungry. We by no means are where we need to be.

“I think it is the first time Huntington Beach has defeated San Diego power Coronado, where U.S. Olympians started their careers.”

Girls’ Volleyball

Mater Dei, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division 1AA, won the Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament title by rallying to defeat second-ranked Redondo Union, 13-25, 25-16, 15-10, at Edison High Monday . Senior outside hitter Elise Zappia of the Monarchs was named tourney MVP.
