High School Roundup: Sage Hill sweeps Brethren Christian


Sage Hill def. Brethren Christian

Sophomore middle block Sophia Mossman finished 11 kills, helping the Lightning sweep the Academy League match, 25-14, 25-12, 25-9, at Liberty Christian High in Huntington Beach on Tuesday.

Sage Hill, ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 3-A poll, improved to 13-4 and 3-0 in league.


Claudia Noto had 15 digs, while Lauren Solaas contributed eight kills and six service aces for the Lightning.

Sage Hill plays host to Crean Lutheran, ranked No. 3, in a league match on Friday at 5 p.m.



Estancia 16, Godinez 2

The Eagles swept in singles in the Orange Coast league match Tuesday at Estancia.

Kinley Ohland (No. 1 singles player), Slade Garnett (No. 2) and Doris Corona each swept for Estancia (5-5, 2-1 in league).

Newport Harbor 18, Marina 0

Peyton Espley-Jones and Jenn Kingsley swept at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, for the Sailors in the Sunset League match Tuesday at Newport Harbor.

Reagan Rutter and Anne LeGrandeur swept at No. 2 doubles, while Elle Zilinski and Livi Zehnder swept at No. 3 doubles for Newport Harbor (7-7, 1-1 in league), which plays at Huntington Beach on Thursday.


Corona del Mar 14, Woodbridge 4

Seniors Kenzie Purcifull and Kimmia Naaseh moved to 18-2 on the season with a 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 sweep at No. 1 doubles for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match at Woodbridge Tuesday.

In singles, junior Riley Gerdau won 6-0, 6-1, and senior Lauren Thaxter won 6-1 before both were subbed out for CdM (7-1, 2-0 in league), ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll.

The Sea Kings play host to No. 5-ranked Mira Costa Wednesday at 3 p.m.

St. Margaret’s 10, Sage Hill 8

The Lightning led, 7-5, after two rounds, but lost the Academy League match Tuesday at The Tennis Club Newport Beach.

Sage won five of nine singles, and three of nine in doubles. Celine Wang and Amira Tarsadia each won twice in singles.



Marina 232, Newport Harbor 253

The Sailors’ Grace Ferrell earned medalist honors for the seventh straight time after shooting three-over-par 39 in the Sunset League match Tuesday at Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach.

Tehya Corona (47), Christina Ferraro (54), Sabrina Weiler (55) and Jackie Defeo (58) also scored for Newport Harbor (5-6, 1-4 in league).

Corona del Mar 198, Northwood 220

Amy Matsuoka and Alyaa Abdulghany both shot even-par 36 to share medalist honors in the Pacific Coast League match Tuesday at Oak Creek Golf Course in Irvine.

Kellie King (40), Gabby Finear (42) and Hanna Hogan (44) also scored for CdM (8-1, 5-0 in league).

Long Beach Wilson Bruin Invitational

LONG BEACH — Alyaa Abdulgahny was the runner-up, as she shot two-under-par 72, helping Corona del Mar High to a fifth-place finish Monday at Recreational Park Golf Course.

Long Beach Wilson won at 308, followed by Palm Desert (310), Troy (313), Mater Dei (314) and the Sea Kings (320).

Amy Matsuoka (75), Karlie Moses (85) and Gabby Kinear (88) also scored, while Kellie King (90) also competed for CdM.


Estancia Tournament

Estancia High lost to Rialto Carter, 10-9, and West Covina, 12-6, Monday in the Eagles’ pool.

Jason Chesemore scored three goals and Aaron Will added two goals in the loss to Carter, when Cesar Coto made 10 saves.

Chesemore scored four goals and Coto made 10 saves against West Covina.


Brentwood Invitational

BRENTWOOD — Patrick Hynes finished ninth in 16 minutes, 33 seconds to help Sage Hill School take fifth out of 16 teams Saturday.

Brian Slaughter (40th in 18:01), Alexis Michaca (42nd in 18:04), Edward Goul (43rd in 18:05) and Matt Warden (50th in 18:32) also competed for the Lightning.


BRENTWOOD — Brittany Andressoo finished 11th in 20 minutes, 21 seconds to help Sage Hill School take fifth out of 16 teams Saturday.

Julia Lowe (26th in 21:22), Rebecca Fudge (35th in 21:57), Julia Dupuis (61st in 22:59), Claire Goul (73rd in 23:24) and Brittany Murphy (96th in 24:19) also competed for the Lightning.
