High School Football: Sage outlasts Trojans

Sage Hill School junior fullback Logan Cook pushed over the goal line on fourth down in the fourth overtime and the Lightning defense held visiting Silver Valley on the ensuing series to claim a dramatic 37-30 nonleague victory on Friday night.

Silver Valley opened the first overtime with a touchdown, but Sage Hill answered.

The two teams exchanged field goals in the second overtime, which like the NCAA format began on the opponents' 25-yard line.

In the third overtime, Sage Hill forced a recovered a fumble at its own nine-yard line after a pass completion, but could not get close the ensuing series to force a fourth extra session.

For the first time in overtime, Sage Hill's offense went first and junior tailback Beau Roth gashed the defense for gains of seven and 14 yards to create first-and-goal at the Silver Valley five-yard line.

After a one-yard loss and a two-yard gain on a quarterback keeper, Cook slammed inside the one-yard line, as officials spotted the ball just inches from the goal line.

Cook powered into the line over right guard, but was standing straight up, giving Silver Valley defenders a big target. They obliged unloading to create a massive collision near the goal line. Cook was pushed backward, but one official on the goal line signaled touchdown.

Will Burns added the conversion kick and the Lightning's defense took the field hoping to end the contest that lasted nearly 31/2 hours.

After two incomplete passes, Silver Valley attempted an end around, but Alfonso Corona and Sam Masarik limited the play to a five-yard gain.

On fourth-and-10 from the 25, a post pattern was overthrown for an incompletion, allowing Sage Hill to improve to 3-3.

Silver Valley (4-1) got a 19-yard field goal from James Liker as time expired in regulation to knot the score at 20-20.

Sage Hill had scored on a 30-yard pass from backup quarterback Robbie Rosoff to Burns with 2:16 left in regulation to take a 20-17 lead.

Sage, which opened the game with a 59-yard flea-flicker from C.J. McCord to Burns, scored on its opening drive. The Lightning drove 80 yards on 14 plays, capping the march with a seven-yard Roth run to take a 13-10 lead at halftime. But an errant snap on the conversion attempt resulted in a failed run, which ultimately cost the Lightning until it ended the game in overtime.

Silver Valley regained the lead on the first play from scrimmage after halftime, as 5-foot-3 bowling ball Daniel Quixchan bolted 59 yards, breaking a handful of tackles to put the Trojans on top, 17-13.
