High School Football: Mustangs top Grizzlies

They had much different roles, but it was easy to know two of the most busy players on offense for the Costa Mesa High football team Friday night at Jim Scott Stadium.

One of them was senior tailback Oronde Crenshaw, who had a career-high six rushing touchdowns.

The other was sophomore kicker Cameron Curet, who was called on eight different times to convert the point-after touchdown and made each one.

Costa Mesa used its high-powered attack to beat Godinez, 64-39, in an Orange Coast League game. The Mustangs are over .500 for the first time this season, improving to 4-3 and 2-0 in league.

Mesa is tied for first in league with both Calvary Chapel and Laguna Beach. Those are the teams that the Mustangs play last in league, facing the Eagles on Nov. 1 at home and Laguna on Nov. 8 on the road.

Crenshaw had what might be called a career night, with 27 carries for 276 yards and the six touchdowns. The rushing touchdown mark is one off the Costa Mesa record of seven, set by Mario Smith in 2011. The yardage finished just shy of Crenshaw’s career best, 307, set last year in a win against Calvary Chapel.

As a team, the Mustangs finished just one point shy of the program record, set in a 65-19 victory over Laguna Beach in 1992.

Crenshaw also was one of three Mesa players with an interception Friday night, Daniel Lawrence and Jason Garcia being the others. On offense, Crenshaw did most of his damage in the first half, scoring on touchdown runs of one, 46, 31, 43 and 65 yards. The last one came just before halftime, with 11 seconds left, giving the Mustangs a 42-12 halftime advantage.

The game appeared in hand, but not so fast. Godinez (3-4, 0-2) came back behind its scrambling quarterback, sophomore Zachary Huizar, who ran for three touchdowns in the game and also passed for one. Huizar’s second rushing score came early in the fourth quarter, narrowing the Mustangs’ advantage to 49-33.

On the Mustangs’ next possession, Moises Gallegos of Godinez recovered a quarterback fumble. Two plays later, Huizar again ran it in from 24 yards out with 9:07 to play. The Grizzlies had a chance to make it a single-possession game, but couldn’t convert the two-point conversion.

The Mustangs’ next drive helped put the game away. Two nice runs by junior fullback Will Padilla got the ball to the Godinez 20-yard line. Two runs by Crenshaw later, he was in the end zone for the sixth time and Costa Mesa opened up a 57-39 lead.

Senior quarterback Oliver Ferris had a stellar night passing, completing eight of 11 for 170 yards and a touchdown to senior receiver Daniel Lawrence. Ferris provided the Mustangs’ last points of the night himself, running up the middle from eight yards out with 3:41 left.

Costa Mesa plays Saddleback on Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. in its next league contest. The game will be held at Segerstrom High.

The Mustangs can clinch a CIF Southern Section Southern Division playoff berth by beating Saddleback.
