Vanguard 93, Bethesda 67

Samantha Doucette scored 24 points and Taylor Belmont added 21 points and 12 assists for the Lions in the nonconference game Saturday night at the Pit.

Melissa Norman contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Nicole Ballestero and Jordie Smith scored 10 points each for Vanguard (2-0), which led, 54-24, at halftime.

Bethesda is 0-3.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 11, UC San Diego 10

Freshman Kyle Trush scored the game-wining goal with 17 seconds left to lift the host Anteaters in the nonconference game Saturday.

Trush scored on a tip shot off a feed from Bojan Hrlec to help the No. 9-ranked ‘Eaters (12-10) snap a seven-game losing streak.

The game was tied seven times.

UCI senior Mitch Wise led UCI with five goals, while Trush had four.

Senior Alex Kazmier played the final three quarters in goal for UCI and made some clutch stops among his eight saves.

UCSD, ranked No. 10, is 12-13.

UCI heads is at Pacific Saturday and at Cal Sunday in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contests.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Vanguard def. San Diego Christian

EL CAJON — Sarah McKinny had nine kills to help lead the No. 10-ranked Lions to a 25-19, 25-20, 25-21 Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday night.

Rachael Barker added eight kills, while Kelly Heenan led Vanguard (20-6, 8-4 in conference) with 17 digs. Morgan Haner had 11 digs and Carla Cantarella had 10 digs for the Lions.

San Diego Christian is 6-20, 4-8.

UC Irvine def. UC Davis

Freshman Cassidy Pickrell tied her career-high with 17 kills and set a new career-best with six blocks and nine digs to lead the Anteaters to a 22-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-17, 15-9 Big West Conference win at the Bren Center Saturday.

Middle blocker Arielle Manz recorded her own career record with nine block assists to go with six kills and four service aces for UCI (12-13, 3-8 in conference).

Outside hitter Marisa Bubica came off the bench to play for the first time since Oct. 19 and added 11 kills. Middle blocker Shannon Fleming recorded nine kills, while outside hitters Allison Lee and Aly Squires each chipped in seven kills each. Squires also totaled 10 digs and three blocks. Libero Arden Davis recorded a team-high 18 digs, while Hannah Nabbout had 13 and Molly Yoder tallied 11 digs. Setter Shelley Anderson posted 50 set assists, two aces and six digs in the victory.

UC Davis is 14-11, 6-6.

Cal State Northridge def. UC Irvine

Aly Squires had 15 kills and 18 digs to lead the host Anteaters, who fell, 32-30, 17-25, 25-20, 25-17, in the Big West Conference match on Friday night.

Squires added four block assists, while Lee Allison had 11 kills, nine digs, one solo block and three block assists.

Arielle Manze had nine kills, six block assists and one solo block for UCI (11-13, 2-8 in conference).

The No. 23-ranked Matadors are 20-4, 10-1.

FOOTBALL

Fullerton 63, Orange Coast 21

The undefeated Hornets, ranked No. 1 in Southern California and No. 2 in the state, raced out to a 28-0 lead and never looked back to win the Southern Conference game at OCC Saturday night.

Fullerton (9-0, 5-0 in conference) led, 49-7, at halftime. The Hornets piled up 361 yards rushing and finished with 601 total offensive yards.

Quarterback Jon Newsom threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns on eight-of-10 passing for OCC (3-7, 1-5).

Fullerton opened the game with an 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Lavorrie Johnson, who also had a 48-yard touchdown run.
