Local prep girls’ basketball teams begin the season in the coming week. Below is a capsule look at the local prep girls’ basketball teams for 2013-14.

Edison Chargers

League: Sunset

Head coach: Dan Wiley (sixth year)

Last year’s records: 18-8 overall; 8-2 league (second).

2013 CIF results: Lost second round Division 1A to eventual champion Etiwanda.

Last league title won: Program has won title four of last five years (CIF champion 2011).

Coach’s take: “It’s going to be a interesting and wide open Sunset League this year, it will be fun,” Wiley said. “If we can overcome our youth, we should be fine.”

Season opener: Monday , at Century Tournament.

Fountain Valley Barons

League: Sunset

Head coach: Cory Clarke (second year)

Coaching staff: Craig Takashima; Sami Little.

Last year’s records: 11-16 overall; 3-7 league (fourth)

2013 CIF results: Reached second-round Division 1A playoffs.

Last league title won: 1996

Coach’s take: “We are small, but quick and aggressive,” Clarke said, “Together, there is good depth that allows us to put pressure and control the pace of games. Our defense will make it tough for opponents to run their offense consistently.”

The schedule: The Barons host their annual Hoop Challenge Dec. 9-14.

Season opener: Defeated Northwood, 74-34, Tuesday. Krause went seven-for-seven from the floor and scored 15 points and nine rebounds; Wu 14 points, three steals; Masuda eight points, five assists, four steals; Kristinat and Huynh both scored eight points; Caponera and Jacobsen each scored seven points.

Huntington Beach Oilers

League: Sunset

Head coach: Russ McClurg (11th year)

Coaching staff: Marshall McClurg; Ruby Viloria.

Last year’s records: 19-7 overall; 7-3 league (third).

2013 CIF results: Reached second round Division 1A playoffs.

Last league title won: 2012.

Returning varsity players: *Paola Roa, PG, Sr. (11.2 ppg., first-team all-league); *Stephanie Louie, G, Sr. (11.2 ppg., first-team all-league); Morgan Potter , C, Jr.; Jenny Rulon, C, Sr.; Reanne Wang, G, Soph.; Caitlyn Nojiri, G, Soph.; Anna Bullock, F, Soph. (*denotes returning starter).

Coach’s take: “This year’s team will be tough, physical, and will look to run and gun this year,” said McClug who will gain his 300th career coaching victory when the Oilers win their first game this season. “With veterans Stephanie Louie and Paola Roa returning, we will be tough for any opponent We are young and have some very talented freshman that look to make a big impact. It is not out of the question for this year’s team to win a league title.”

The schedule: The Oilers will compete Dec. 9 at the Fountain Valley Hoop Classic, and travel to Arizona for the Nike Tournament.

Season opener: Monday , 7 p.m., home vs. Esperanza.

Marina Vikings

League: Sunset

Head coach: Carol Osbrink (second year)

Coaching staff: Wendy Malott; Becky Daniel; Caameron Daniel; Mike Rauterkus.

Last year’s records: 12-14 overall; 3-7 league (tied-fourth)

2013 CIF results: Did not advance.

Returning varsity players: Kelsey Callanan, F, Sr.; Lindsey Honma, G, Jr.; Jane Kim, F, Sr.; Megan Lewis, F, Jr; *Melissa Lindquist, G, Sr.(team leader assists/steals; second-team all-league); *Natasha Mangham, F, Sr. (11 rebs/10 ppg., team MVP, second-team all-league); *Madison Yutkins, G, Sr.(10 ppg. league, second-team all-league); Christine Nguyen, G, Sr. (*denotes returning starter).

Varsity newcomers: Mary Dishoian, G, Soph.; Danielle Kennedy, G, Sr. (transfer from Fountain Valley); Kydell Pearson, F, Jr.

Coach’s take: “I am very proud of all of the hard work this team has put in the off-season, and the commitment the girls have made to the program and each other,” Osborne said. “Based on the improvements we have made, we will surprise some teams with our balanced offense, lock-down defense, and our speed.”

The schedule: The Vikings will defend last year’s title when they compete at the Downey Tournament, return to the Ocean View Tournament where last year they won the consolation championship, and co-host, with Edison, the annual Larry Doyle O.C. Championships in late-December.

Season opener: Defeated Katella, 77-48, Tuesday. Mangham had 17 points and 15 rebounds; Yutkins 14 points, three assists and three steals; Pearson 11 points and 14 rebounds; Kennedy 11 points, four assists, four steals; Lewis 11 points; Lindquist nine assists, three steals.

Ocean View Seahawks

League: Golden West

Head coach: Kim Morris (sixth year)

Coaching staff: Shane Morris; Alexxas Laun; Steve Harris.

Last year’s records: 18-10 overall; 5-6 league (tied-third)

2013 CIF results: Reached second round Division 3A playoffs.

Last league title won: 2009.

Returning varsity players: *Deja Duke, G, Sr.; Megan Meyer,G/F, Jr.; Savanna Schroeder, G, Jr.; Kate Vang, G, Sr.; *Treasure Robinson, ,F Soph. (7.7/6.2 rebs. pg.); *Sally Morris, G, Soph.; Danelle Almiranez, G, Soph. (*denotes returning starter).

Varsity newcomers: Candice Hambley, G, Sr.; Madisyn Newberry, F, Soph.; Amy Thompson, G/F, Soph.; Dailyn Nguyen, G, Soph.; Inger Olsen, F, Sr.

Team notes: The Seahawks return seven players, three starters, from last year’s playoff team that was 18-10 and posted the program’s best record since the 2007-08 season. A young squad includes only one senior, two juniors and six sophomores, three of whom played on last year’s 22-2 junior varsity team.

The schedule: The Seahawks start tourney play next Monday (Dec. 2) at the Oxford Academy Tournament. They will host the Ocean View Hawk Holiday Classic starting Dec. 9.

Season opener: Saturday, 12:30 p.m., vs. La Quinta (Coaches for a Cause, Ocean View High).

Note: Brethren Christian will not field a varsity girls’ basketball team for the 2013-14 season, school Athletic Director and boys’ basketball Coach Jon Bahnsen said. The Warriors will only compete at the junior varsity level this season with a team comprised of one junior, five sophomores and four freshmen.

Bahnsen said the program “plans to return” to play at the varsity level in 2014-15.
