Volleyball tourneys are Saturday

The Laguna Beach Open Men’s and Women’s Beach Volleyball Tournaments will play host to the Christmas Four Person Draw Volleyball Tournament and Potluck starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at South Main Beach.

There is no registration cost.

The tournament format is a four-person (coed) draw with two divisions (Social and Open). Pool play games will be held first before the start of elimination round competition. Families will be allowed to sign up together as a team. City department and restaurant teams are also invited to participate.

Tournament participants are requested to bring a potluck dish or beverage that will serve four-to-six people.

Team USA women win Holiday Cup

The USA Women’s National Water Polo Team, which included local athletes Annika Dries (Laguna Beach High, Stanford) and Makenzie Fischer (Laguna Beach High), won the 2013 Holiday Cup Sunday following a 13-5 win over Greece at Foothill High.

Dries scored the winning goal with 4:13 left in the third quarter Sunday. It broke a 4-4 tie and gave Team USA a 5-4 lead.

Team USA went 5-0 at the tournament, which included teams from Greece, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, and Russia.

The tournament started Dec. 11.

In other water polo news Monday, Dries and Fischer also was named to the 2013 USA Women’s Senior National Team World Cup Qualification roster, and former Laguna Beach High star Nolan McConnell (Long Beach St.), made the USA Men’s Senior National Team World Cup Qualification roster. The World Cup qualification tournaments were played Tuesday through Thursday at Foothill High.

On Tuesday, the Team USA men’s team downed Canada, 11-6, and the Team USA women’s team defeated Canada, 11-4.

The USA Women’s Senior National team is coached by Adam Krikorian. The USA Men’s Senior National Team is coached by Dejan Udovicic.
