It is set: the Sunset League lead in boys' basketball will be on the line Friday.
Los Alamitos and Edison made sure that their Friday showdown would have major ramifications as to who does win the Sunset title by winning their respective games Wednesday. That same night, Fountain Valley, last year's title holder, earned its first league victory, and Ocean View won in Golden West League play.
Edison can move into a tie for the league lead Friday by defeating Los Alamitos. The Chargers, ranked sixth in CIF Southern Section Division 1A, play host to the Griffins, the No. 11 team in Division 1AA, at 7 p.m.
Edison set up the showdown by winning handily, 69-49, at Newport Harbor Wednesday. Junior guards Brae Ivey, AJ Garrity and Jake Haar scored 22, 12, and 11 points, respectively, for the Chargers who ran their league record to 6-1 and overall record to 19-4.
Los Alamitos went to 7-0 in league and 20-3 overall Wednesday by defeating host Marina, 62-48. Senior guard Khalid Washington scored 23 points to lead the Griffins. Junior forward Mitchell Barnes scored a team-high 12 points for the Vikings (2-5 league, 8-15 overall).
In the first league meeting between the teams Jan. 17, Los Alamitos beat Edison, 63-54.
"The players worked hard in winning four games since their loss at Los Al, wanting a chance to play for the title," Edison Coach Rich Boyce said.
Fountain Valley won its first Sunset game Wednesday by holding off visiting Huntington Beach, 53-50. The Barons (1-6 league, 8-14 overall) led by as many as 17 points in the second half before the Oilers (1-6 league, 4-19 overall) rallied.
Barons senior guard Richard Le was red-hot from three-point range, hitting eight three-pointers en route to a game-high 23 points. Senior guard Cory Bitzer canned five three-point shots and finished with 19 points.
"We have been making steady progress in all phases the last three games and it was nice for the guys to get a win to reward their hard work," Fountain Valley Coach Roger Holmes said. "We have been shooting the ball much better these last couple of games and made 15 threes against Huntington."
In a Golden West League game Wednesday, Ocean View won its sixth league game by outscoring host Segerstrom, 30-17, in the second half to pull out to a 55-46 victory. Senior guard Angel Nieves scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Seahawks (6-2 league, 11-13 overall). Senior guard Evan Bunin scored 12 points, senior forward Tristan Wenschlag had 10 points, and junior forward Zarek Osborne scored nine points and had seven rebounds.
In Academy League action Thursday, Brethren Christian edged Sage Hill, 50-47. The Warriors, ranked third in CIF Southern Section Division 5AA, also play host to Oxford Academy at 8 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Christian School.
In addition, to the Los Alamitos-Edison game, boys' basketball games on tap at 7 p.m. Friday include Newport Harbor at Fountain Valley, Huntington hosting Marina, and Ocean View hosting Golden West League leader Westminster.
