Ty Hutchins led the Pirates with 17 kills and seven digs during the Pirates’ 25-23, 25-15, 29-27 sweep in Pacific Coast Conference action Friday.

Jim Webb had 15 kills and Brendan Duff had 45 assists for OCC (12-1, 5-1 in conference).

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Spring Break Invitational

UC Irvine sophomore Bridget Devaney tied the school record in the hammer throw Friday in the first day of competition at Anteater Stadium.

Devaney had a mark of 166-11, tying the mark initially set by Jessica Imani in 2012. Devaney finished sixth of 19 competitors in the event Friday.

Colleen Lillig used a burst down the home stretch to finish second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:22.59. Teammate Carlotta Pham placed ninth in 17:57.91.

Hannah Ruby finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:18.67, improving on her No. 6 time in UCI history, and Nicole Mendoza was seventh with a time of 12:36.39.

After three events, UCI is in third place with 20 points. Northern Arizona leads with 37 and Long Beach State is second with 28.

Field events begin at 10 a.m. Saturday with the first track event at noon.

Spring Break Invitational

UC Irvine’s Tommy Newton-Neal earned first place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on the first day of competition Friday.

He finished with a personal-best time of 9:20.91 in winning the race at Anteater Stadium.

UCI’s Alex Tebbe placed third in the 5,000 meters with at personal-best time of 14:35.54. Munir Kahssay was fifth in 14:49.39 and Steven Melena finished sixth in 14:50.75.

The ‘Eaters and Northern Arizona are tied for the lead with 23 points after three events. UC Riverside is in third with 19 points.
