Breakers stay perfect in OCL

At the halfway point of the Orange Coast League boys’ tennis season, Laguna Beach has positioned itself to make a strong run toward repeating as league champion.

The Breakers took their OCL record to 4-0 Tuesday by defeating visiting Costa Mesa, 14-4. A clean sweep through doubles action highlighted the win which put the Breakers at 4-0 in league, and 5-5 overall.

In doubles, No. 1 Alex Duong/Sterling Dudley-Bowen won their three sets by 6-0 scores. At No. 2, Ethan Gee/Stuart Webb won, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, and No. 3 Tim Nguyen/Jeff Spitz took 7-5, 6-0, 6-0 sets.

“The team was very focused, and freshman Zack Washer swept his singles matches losing only one game in three sets,” Laguna Coach Don Davis said.

Washer, at No. 2 singles, swept his opponents by scores of 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

Laguna won its third league match March 27 by handling Godinez, 17-1, at Santa Ana Valley High.

“The entire team played very well,” Davis said.

Laguna plays three matches in the coming week, starting with a 3 p.m. nonleague home match Tuesday against El Toro. The Breakers play host to Laguna Hills at 3 p.m. Wednesday, and are back in Orange Coast League action at 3 p.m. Thursday at home against Saddleback.

Davis said that a nonleague match with Palm Springs, originally scheduled for Friday, has been rescheduled for May 2.

Swimming

The Laguna boys’ and girls’ teams continued to dominate in Orange Coast League competition as both squads defeated visiting Estancia Wednesday.

The boys’ team won by a 137-32 score, the girls’ team, by a 130-37 score.

Both teams improved to 3-0 in league with two league meets remaining before the OCL prelims May 6 at Costa Mesa High.

Top times for the Breakers Wednesday included Aria Fischer in the girls’ 500-yard freestyle with a personal-best first-place and CIF qualifying time of 5:25.10.

The Breakers swept the girls’ 500 free with Kirra Nash taking second (5:41.92, CIF consideration time), and Daniela Lucidi placed third (5:48. 57, CIF consideration time). Erik Juliusson also swam to a CIF qualifying time of 53.40 in the boys’ 100 backstroke.

The Breakers will compete Saturday at the Mission Viejo Invitational, their final competition before spring break.

Boys’ Volleyball

In a match where Laguna freely rotated its lineup, the Breakers on Tuesday scored a 25-9, 25-14, 25-15 Orange Coast League victory over Estancia (0-2 league).

Outside hitter Lucas Capobianco led Laguna in kills with nine. Setter JP Wollam and libero Zack Bekken both had six digs, and setters Cameron DePfyffer and Isaac Wulff had 12 assists apiece.

The win put Laguna, the third-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 2, at 3-0 in league, and 7-3 overall.

The Breakers have won 125 straight sets in league play.

“The team is continuing to improve in key areas,” Laguna Coach Darren Utterback said.

In a league match March 27, Laguna swept Saddleback, 25-9, 25-20, 25-11. Middle blocker Tyler Alter had 14 kills, defensive specialist Jake Hexberg had 13 kills, five digs and four aces, Wollam 22 digs, and DePfyffer and setter/outside hitter Alec Wulff both had 19 assists.

The Breakers are home Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. league game. They also visit Calvary Chapel Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. league road match.

Boys’ Golf

The Breakers suffered a 201-210 Orange Coast League loss Wednesday to host Calvary Chapel at Mile Square Park Golf Course (par 36) in Fountain Valley.

Laguna was awarded a league forfeit victory Monday from Costa Mesa, Coach Scott Finn said.

“We need to play better to remain competitive with the schools around us,” Finn said.

The Breakers are back in action Wednesday at home against Calvary Chapel at 2:30 p.m. at Aliso Viejo Country Club.

Girls’ Sand Volleyball

The Breakers fell to both Huntington Beach and Mater Dei Saturday by 3-0 scores in matches played at Huntington Beach, suffering their first two losses in the South Coast Division of the Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League.

Laguna’s No. 1 team of Briana Boyd and Sabrina Stillwell scored the only point for the Breakers (2-2) in their loss to Huntington, winning their first game, 21-16.

Track & Field

The Laguna boys’ and girls’ teams took on Calvary Chapel and Estancia in an Orange Coast League tri-meet Thursday. The scores weren’t available at press time.

Both Laguna teams will compete Friday and Saturday at the 24th Trabuco Hills Invitational.

Breakers named All-CIF Girls’ Water Polo

Laguna Beach, which last month won the CIF Southern Section Division 1 girls’ water polo championship, placed four members from its team on the 2014 All-CIF Southern Section Division 1 Girls’ Water Polo Team. Junior Makenzie Fischer, the Most Valuable Player in the Orange Coast League, was named MVP, and Laguna’s Ethan Damato, was selected Coach of the Year, for Division 1. Making the All-CIF Division 1 first-team from Laguna were senior Cara Borkovec and freshmen Aria Fischer and Bella Baldridge.
